Why assists are misleading..

Post#1 » by Imadogg » Mon Nov 1, 2010 2:41 am

I know you guys are watching the game right now. People who don't watch Lakers games just look at assists numbers and compare Kobe to others *coughlebroncough* and say that Kobe doesn't pass or can't pass or is too selfish to pass.

Kobe is playing really well tonight, making shots, rebounding, doing the little things... and he also has only 1 assist. But if you're watching, you know that he can easily have around 4-5 right now (at least). He drives, sees Pau open, and gives him the pass (Pau gets hacked). He turns around for the jumper, sees Pau open while he's in the air, and gives him the perfect pass (Pau gets fouled again).

Here's the watching the games to know how players really play!

Really you can blame the Triangle, it's usually the 2nd to 3rd pass that gets the assist. But I feel where you're coming from.

Yea, the triangle and ball movement that comes with it would give Kobe and others on our team plenty of hockey assists, but today I was just noticing his perfect direct passes to the man inside (Pau), yet there's a foul that gives Pau 2 FTs so no assist is awarded on the play.

Assist seemed more important when Magic was getting them. Setting all kind of records. Tri has never been my favorite. It does win and get the championships. So that is what is important. Stats come and go. Kobe is the Lakers all time scorer and is heading up the charts. So the tri might have made that happen. All stats are just that. Stats. At the end of the game, end of the year. Just matters who won it all. The rest is for players to use to get more money or fantsasy geeks to draft players.

non-laker fans an haters alike will also use this fact to knock kobe as a "selfish" player which he is at times but he doesn't dominate the ball as much as before at least not to the lvl of James so I dont care that James does nearly triple D every nite, we're winning and our team is extremely efficient right now, I hardly ever see much ISO anymore.

There should be a stat for assisting an assist in basketball.

Assists is only a pass that leads to a score, not all good passes lead to good baskets. Also they don't count setting up a guy on the foul line. Also because it usually is the pass before the assist that usually sets up the actual play.

That is why assists are misleading. :D

I look at it as a compliment for Kobe's ability to play off the ball as effectively as he can be with the ball in his hands.

Yeah, I agree... Jordan averaged about 6 apg for his career and Kobe is right around 5 apg. And, besides Kobe has made a lot of great passes but his teammates just weren't able to convert. I mean - Ron Artest has a horrible shooting percentage from long range right now, and many of his potential baskets were passes from Kobe.

I get what your saying, but it doesnt make too much sense, when an assist is atleast 2points,and a rebound can lead to no points.

Kobe's a good passer. He's not a great passer, but I mean he's a sg he doesnt have to be.He's a great scorer,Defender and winner. At the sametime I'm not going to take anything away from LBJ,because he is a great passer...Kobe is selfish a player, but he's not too selfish. He's not selfish to the point it will be detriment to his teams.Ofcourse there are games when he can be,but in the grandscheme of things he's not....
He's as selfish as he should be,thats why he takes over games, and will his team's to victory..Because he can be selfish. As far as Kobe would have more assist if guys would convert more,,,you can say the samething for guys like Chris Paul,Lebron, even Nash..The key thing is while Kobe may not be one of the best passers in the league, He's one of the best passers at his position..Shooting Guard, Does have the word shoot in it...so Thats his job.

I think Assists to TO ratio is a better number to look at

No it isn't.

Lets suppose Kobe is feeding Pau for the isolation post up.. for the most part it works with Pau catching the ball and either scoring or getting hacked.. Kobe doesn't generate many assists from such a play since he's letting Pau Gasol create his own shot. Then there are times when Kobe and Gasol miscommunicate, or the defender overplays, guess who will get that turnover? Kobe..

So that will skew any Assists/ TO ratio stat and renders it useless.

I'd rather have an abundance of both.

i understand what you're getting at

but i'd just like to point out that every game every team will record more rebounds than assists on any given night. its like saying i'd rather have the lakers score more points than rebounds

5 of Kobe's assists were for 3pt shots, 6 were for point-blank shots, and 1 was on a midrange. The man can make plays... he was beautiful last night :')
