Let's grab Magnum Rolle

Post#1 » by Bassman » Tue Oct 26, 2010 3:58 pm

So the Pacers waive their 2nd rounder aquired in a trade, Magnum Rolle. Other than a name suited for cheesy movie scripts, why should we grab this guy?

> He's a 6'11". 225 lb player who demonstrated well in summer league, called one of the "steals of the draft" by The Boston Globe, and has a lot potential for growth (just started playing in High School).

> Rolle has shown he can score in a variety of ways and he can rebound. Plus, he's a shot blocker.

I see Rolle's role as the perfect compliment behind Ty Thomas, and if he adds weight/muscle over time, he could morph into a 5. Does everyone else think he represents a quality investment on the cheap?
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I don't how it works but maybe Red Claws would prefer him over Crittenton. Other than that we don't really have a free spot for him. We could bring him next year I guess.

Meh. How often do gigantic, athletic freaks end up actually developing into more than a guy to swat shots and rebound? With as often as people bitch about LB not playing guys like UPS, you want to add another guy that's not going to get any opportunities to play outside of the d-league? Didn't you constantly write off Ajinça for being a bean poll that doesn't deserve a roster spot?

No to Magnum Rolle. Guy's name indicates that he was born to be a pornstar, he probably has a better chance of making it in that league than this one.

I would consider him to be one of the better second round prospects from last draft. But right now he's Jermario Davidson with a cooler name - potential laden but far from being able to presently make an impact on the floor.

If we had an open roster spot, I'd be all for rolling the dice. But since we dont have room to accomodate him (need that final spot for a third PG be it Collins or a veteran journeyman), I suppose we'll have to pass. If he clears waivers, I believe Indy's affiliate is awarded his D-league rights.

I meant it like only viable reason to sign him (unguaranteed contract) would be to cut him and secure him for our Maine team (but I doubt that is even possible to do it this way).

"if he adds weight/muscle over time" reminded me Lexy's adventures too. Not sure our fanbase is ready to bring in another big man which success relies on his future physical development. Regardless we don't have space now and we should wait till we clear bad contracts or start rebuilding before stacking cheap second round gambles. I guess.

I think we have enough power forwards for two teams.

No room with the Bobcats. Rolle should try to get himself onto the Cavs. A young big prospect and a team in shambles. Perfect match.

It's becoming difficult in this league to be a defensive power forward. With Centers it's almost a virtue, look at Perkins and Howard. People like them in part because they're so focused on defense. But look at Nowitzki and several other PF's and you'll see that offense has to be the priority anymore.

I railed against Ajinca primarily from being picked where he was, when he had demonstrated NO viable basketball prowess other than being tall with some athletic potential. Yes, he was and is a bean pole. Rolle is non of the above. He may be young to basketball but he demonstrated skill and results at Louisiana Tech, and shows more promise now than Ajinca ever did.

If we had the luxury to cut a contract and sign the Mag I'd vote McGuire off the island in a heartbeat, sign Rolle, and preserve the option of ditching Tank for a better PG.

We don't need him and LB is hit or miss with rookie development.

Instead, we need to send Collins to the D-League and use the freed roster spot to sign a veteran free agent like Jamaal Tinsley, Larry Hughes, or if I had my choice: Mario West. He's played for Atlanta for several years. Great defender so I'm sure LB would love him.

Collins would still be on the roster. Its not like the MLB or NHL minors.

For every bean pole that becomes a good player, there are 5 Steven Hunters'. Doesn't help Magnum that he was a late 2nd round pick in a league where atheltic bigs are prizes. Also, cut by a team that desperately needs frontcourt help.

yeah, like chrbal said, the pacers frontcourt is hibbert, foster, tyler and mcroberts. not exactly a bunch of proven studs. why did they cut him?

let him fight it out in the d-league and keep an eye on him.

Well, someone on the Observer Comments mentioned Jason Hart. I like it.

Hart was good here. Decent PG that could come in if necessary.

Useless fact time:

Jason Hart handed Top Bob the game ball after the franchises first ever win.

I agree with Walt. And I don't think that "kid" has any potential to growth. He's almost 25 years old.

I think we should sign Magnum Rolle simply because of his name. Think of the marketing opportunities!

We don't need someone because he has a cool name. We have a serious gap at point and at center. We need contributors and players that have game and are serious about refining that game.

If Magnum has game, he should be welcomed. Otherwise, let's make these roster spots count for something!

Idk if my memory is wrong but didn't he get drafted by the red claws?
