Thursday's deadline on Gregg. What happens

MLBastian
Jays have til midnight Thurs night to either pick up K. Gregg's $4.5 m option for '11, $8.75 m option for '11-'12 or make him a free agent.

I'm guessing they'll pick up the 2011 option because of the uncertainty about Downs, Frasor, etc. and the availability of other options in free agency. Probably a decent stopgap until internal development produces a suitable closer.

Agreed. Considering we will be losing some pitchers, we could use him for some role. And relatively cheap.

I don't mind him here long-term as long as he isn't still the unquestionable closer in 2 years.

They'll pick up his 2011 option, but not the 2012 option IMO.

That's probably the best move to make.

Keep in mind that Gregg isn't a spring chicken anymore either.

I think they let him go.

i really dont want to see The Gregg out there anymore, can't trust me on the mount. but since there's no good options.. i'll settle for The Gregg for one more year. most definitely not the closer for the contending year in 2012

i would like to see accardo back in the closers position if he gets his form back ..otherwise...we can find any reliver to become closer...although greg at 30 plus saves...it sure didnt seem like it...

Accardo as closer? You're living in the past. He's way more likely to be non-tendered.

Blue Jays declined Kevin Gregg's club options, making him a free agent

Wow. I really thought they would pick it up.

This may signal that the team expects Frasor to accept arbitration. Kinda surprised, honestly.

I don't any real problem with not picking up Gregg's option, I just hope they put that money to some other use instead of just pocketing it. You never really know with Rogers.

You should build bullpens from within, not through costly free agency.

The Jays have more than enough young pitchers that they'll be fine in the pen.

AA loves those picks... Makes sense, we got plenty of young pen arms we could throw into the bullpen like Farina, Farquhar..and Stewart if he doesn't make the rotation. I sense a trade for a young power arm to close like Joba?

wow I'm surprised. Those 37 saves isn't gonna be easy to replace.

I have to say I'm surprised and I don't really like the move. We we let Gregg, Downs and Fraser go then we're letting our top 3 bullpen players go.

Fraina and Farquhar are very good young guys, but neither of them are ready to shoulder the load for the whole season yet.

I'm can't believe I'm saying it, but I hope that Frazer accepts arbitration. We also need to bring in a free agent IMO.

If we replicate the save opportunities, we'll replace the saves. Gregg wasn't particularly good, and the only thing that prevented him from being particularly bad was the low number of HRs he allowed...a category where he's lurched from good to bad and back in recent years.

86% save rate is actually pretty good. He's was a top 10 closer last year (probably around 8th IMO) so he's a borderline playoff closer.

So while he is replaceable, he will not be easily replaced.

Just throw another average reliever out there, that replaces him. Camp and Janssen could do the same job, if not better.
