Yu Darvish Plans To Play In MLB In 2012

Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish intends to play in North America in 2012, tweets Newsday's David Lennon. Amidst speculation that Darvish might pursue a transfer to the majors next season, he chose to stay in Japan, a move Lennon says was prompted by a divorce.

Lennon mentions the Mets as a possible suitor, but New York is just one of the teams who would be interested in Darvish, who would be just 25 years old on Opening Day 2012. The Mets, Braves, Rangers, Rays and Yankees have all been connected to Darvish, in addition to the Nationals, Orioles and Red Sox.

Darvish has a career 2.12 ERA, a 3.28 K/BB ratio, and 974 strikeouts in 1036.1 innings for the Nippon Ham Fighters. He's best known to North American fans from his terrific performance at the 2009 World Baseball Classic that helped lead Japan to the title.

I want him on our team. I don't care how much it costs.

lol aren't you korean? I can't seem to support Japanese baseball players ever since the events of the last 2 WBCs... but he's okay since the korean team lit him up during the last tournament :) . No doubt this guy's still is a freakin monster though. Probably the best pitcher world outside of MLB.

I think he's going to come over and be like Hideki Nomo was in the first few years. But there's a chance they could wear him out like they wore out Dice-K. Too many seasons of 200 IP ball too young.

If he still has velocity after this season, then we should look at him though.

He's part Turkish and that overpowers his Japanese-ness. And Koreans and Turkish have the same Altaic roots :P ;)

You're right. Persian. Ehh...he's Japanese. I can't support him anyhow.

I concede that Dice K is overrated, a decent mid rotation starter, but needs to cut down on the nibbling. As for the gyroball, even Matsuzaka himself admitted that he doesn't throw it. As for Yu Darvish, it's not a bad chance to give the guy a shot, especially with how big the Blue Jays scouting staff is.

Yea he got hyped because of that one pitch and some good showings in Japan/WBC, but this guy is mount presence + stuff = potential. I think he's potentially a more crafty version of someone like Beckett, and at worst he's Luke Hochevar.

I wouldnt be surprised if the Jays are in the running for him. I know AA has a better scouting team and they're looking everywhere they can, not just at US college/prep schools like JP did.

I don't recall this team ever signing or pursuing a prospect/player from Asia. Can anyone confirm?

tbh as much as it pains me to day this, we just cannot compete with the Ny's and the bostons for the prized free agents..we have to build through the draft and young players with high ceilings...just like AA has been doing

I spent a lot of years in Japan. You would not believe how much cash the Mariners made off Ichiro, or how much the Yankees made off Matsui. Signing established Japanese players (for the most part) is good economics. The Japanese buy up merchandise and they don't do knock offs.

having said this, i'm surprised that the A's were to sign Hisashi Iwakuma with little competition.. it seems that their only other threads were the Rangers and Mariners?

BALTIMORE - While the bullpen burned in Baltimore, general manager Alex Anthopoulos was in Japan looking for talent for next season.

Anthopoulos was scouting World Baseball Classic sensation Yu Darvish. The 6-foot-5, 185 lbs. right-hander is with the Nippon Ham Fighters. Darvish, 25, picked up his 16th win Tuesday night in front of major-league scouts. He has a 16-4 record with a 1.54 ERA walking 27 and striking out 206 in 175 innings.

A year ago he was 12-8 with a 1.78, walking 47 and striking out 222 in 202 innings. The New York Yankees are also interested.

AA wouldn't go all the way to Japan if he wasn't serious about Darvish. Might we actually sign a big time FA this offseason?

If so, i hope it's not him. Too much loot, and not enough games vs MLB talent.. I rather go the trade route when it comes to SP's.
