OT: What's J.P. Arencibia Ceiling?

Post#1 » by Wally West » Thu Nov 4, 2010 5:05 am

What is the potential of JP? Is he a guy that could potentially hit 20+ homeruns and drive in 100+ rbi's a season. For several years, we've heard great ravings about the kid but is he a guy that will be our future catcher for many year to come or do we see him as a guy that could be use as a trade chip to potentially acquire a legit 3rd baseman. Is catcher even in his future or is he best suited to pay 1B?

no discipline at the plate, racks up Ks. sure he'll have some pop if he connects. but it's gonna be hard to watch like wells at the plate

Honestly, I think he might be moved to another team or he might not be a C. I cant recall too many reporters who were positive about the guy at the end of the season. Usually, they have an idea of guys who might stick around and they make sure they re complimentary about the guy.

Travis D Arnaud received all kinds of praise though

I doubt he'll be an improvement over Buck.

He could be one of the better offencive catchers in the league, like Victor Martinez in his Cleveland days, only a better power hitter....... defence is good but i noticed a pattern every time he piched. The Pitchers dont respond as good with him.

Jose Molina is a defencive ace, so its good JAYS r keeping him around, just incase...... im high on Arencibia. Hopefully JAYS dont trade him and he can improve his defence, i guess. Letting him go could be a mistake.

I think JPA will stay at catcher hes young so he has to get used to being in Command of guys that are much older and much more experienced. As far as offense I think he can defiantly hit close to 20 HR per year but will struggle to hit over 230 and get on base more than 300. Think Barajas with a little more pop. I do think he will be traded simply because we have better starting prospects in D.Arnaud and Perez and Jolermen fills the defensive specialist/ backup role much better

Phelps was a career .273/.343/.472 hitter. Those would be excellent numbers out of the catcher position. I doubt JPA will be that good offensively. I think he will fit into the low-AVG, low-OBP, good SLG criteria most years, unless his plate discipline dramatically improves.

As long as he sticks at catcher and can play there at an above average clip defensively, it will be fine. If they move him to 1B or something like that, his value will plummet badly.

Honestly, he's not as great as people think he is. Up until around June he was hitting about .240 in Triple A before he got incredibly hot and got his average over .300. I see him being a Rod Barajas at best, thus I don't see the point of letting Buck go just so we can watch this guy hit .200 with below average defence in the big leagues

I see him as an upgrade of Barajas in 2 or so years. But next year's going to have some ups and downs.

I think he'll end up at around .230/.300/.400 next year with about 15 HR's.

He may top out at .270/.340/.450 and 20-25 HR's.

your living in a dream land if you think a guy can swing at that many pitches and have a OBP higher than 310

Long term you think that most people thought he was going to be higher than .800 OPS & 20-25 HR's?

A #1 catcher usually only plays 110-120 games to keep the knees rested so it's difficult to hit 30+ in a season.

Those are great #'s for a catcher.
