Blue Jays acquire Miguel Olivo

.269 .315 .449 .765 last year with 14 HR's.
Cash and a player to be named later. They can pick up his option today by midnight I believe or he's a type B free agent.
They're either gearing up for a trade of some prospects or we're just acquiring a sandwich pick for draft picks.

AA = god? It's like buying a draft pick if the Jays decline his option. Type B free agent.

Call me crazy, but I'd pick up the option. $2.7M is a pretty big bargain for what Olivo can provide.
They can even decide what to do between JPA and Olivo later.

Miguel Olivo was pretty good last year, easily above average catcher, i'd hang on to him but wouldn't mind the pick either.

I would pick it up 42% CS is very nice a lot cheaper than Buck for similar production.

Re: Blue Jays acquire Miguel Olivo
Tough call here. I like an Olivo/Molina veteran combo, but at the same time, want to see JPA get some quality playing time in the bigs. If this is just to buy a draft pick, quite shrewd on AA's part.

Yeah, I'm thinking picking up the option is the way to go. Olivo at $2.7M is worth more than a pick, I think. They can decide later what they want to do with him.

8 potential picks in the top 50 is crazy. They re rebuilding the team fast.

Re: Blue Jays acquire Miguel Olivo
But if he wanted the draft pick from the Type B, why not just offer Buck arbitration?

Bastian: Ask me? Seems like a case where Jays might decline the option to hopefully get the pick. Remember, re-signing Buck would cost Jays a pick.
Confused. How would it cost us a pick to re-sign Buck?
Edit: I guess he means they'd forgo the chance to get a pick

Maybe they think he would accept.

Re: Blue Jays acquire Miguel Olivo
Any of the three possibilities (picking up the option, offering arb and having it declined, offering arb and having it accepted) is fine by me, but I would kinda like to see him return a pick.
Not because we're going to be lacking for picks, but because I can't think of another situation where a team has pulled something like this and essentially bought a draft choice.

Because if we dont resign him we get a pick. I guess in this case, we have two Type B catchers on the market if we decline Olivo

Only if Olivo declines arbitration, which isn't a given. I still like the risk/reward of declining the option and offering it though, as worst-case it probably costs a few hundred thou extra.

No I get that, but it sounded like he said we'd lose an additional pick.

It would be amusing, but there seems to be more value in just picking up that cheap option.

Re: Blue Jays acquire Miguel Olivo
I dont understand why the Rockies just didnt keep the guy, decline his option and get a pick back. Am I missing something here?
