Steve Nash might become available

Suns' Nash might become available

There are new rumblings out of Phoenix if the Suns falter, Steve Nash will on the trading block.

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni and Amar'e Stoudemire would give their left lung to reunite with the veteran playmaker. Nash lives in SoHo in the summer and has given vibes about being intrigued about ending his career as a Knick.

Steve Kerr, the former Suns president who worked last night's Knicks-Bulls game for TNT, said he feels the Knicks wouldn't have the pieces to land Nash. For that matter, he feels they couldn't land Carmelo Anthony, either.

"In that situation where you want to start over, maybe rebuild, you got to get draft picks and the Knicks don't have any. They gave them to Houston," Kerr told The Post before the Knicks' 120-112 victory. "I don't see what you put together on that roster that makes sense for Phoenix. Or Denver."

Kerr, who quit in June to go back to TV, said he can foresee Phoenix moving forward with a Nash trade if it believes it can't win now.

"Nobody's untradeable," Kerr said. "I know a year ago no way we would've considered that. But if a team struggles and looks like it won't be a playoff team, they have to consider all their options. But you can't just do it for the sake of doing it. You have to hit a home run. The reality is I don't see any deal put together for those two teams."

What type of value do you think Phoenix can get for Steve Nash?

Jamal Crawford & Jeff Teague probably won't cut it for us.

Salary:
$10,310,938
$11,689,062

I think Orlando would end up with him.

I agree with Kerr that the Knicks have no assets to swing a deal. I'm not sure I buy Orlando's assets either, but that's just me. They have expiring salary (Carter sort of) and then pieces like Gortat, Redick, and Anderson that have value, but would Phoenix covet any of them? The picks that could contribute would be low.

Once I weighed the options I agree with you on Orlando with a strange suggestion:
Nash and Turkoglu for
Carter, Anderson, Duhon and a 1st.

Nash is used to get a do over on Hedo's salary for Phoenix. Carter is not guaranteed next year allowing them to really shed salary. Duhon gives them a backup PG allowing them to turn the job over to Dragic without strife (Nelson might cause strife). Anderson gives a stretch 4 to pair with Frye.

That simply isn't enough value for Phx. to make that trade though. All they really get in that deal is some cap relief with Carter's expiring deal or non guaranteed salary. Anderson and Duhon provide no real value other than being backups and the #1 pick will be in the late 20s. So in essence they get nothing really in return for Nash with this deal. I believe a Crawford/Teague with a 1st is a better deal than the Orlando one. At least they get a young PG with upside that could turn into a star, cap relief with Craw and #1 pick. I would do this deal in a heartbeat for Nash too.

My theory was they didn't need a PG prospect with Dragic to take over. IMO Anderson's upside is greater than Teague at this point from what I've seen on the floor. Also in the Atlanta deal we don't take Hedo's salary which has 3 more years on it. The cap relief is not just from Nash, but from a combination of Nash/Hedo which adds up.

Looking around NJ could probably make a better offer than either of us (Harris and a F), but it is hard to evaluate in Phoenix's eyes. #1 I don't thing they'd deal Nash because he sells tickets. But if they did want to rebuild it's hard to say what their cornerstones are. You got Dragic and Lopez as probables. Then you go to Frye, Dudley, and Childress as under contract long term, but none are big money.

Orlando makes a good possible home because Nash would be an offensive upgrade over Nelson and Howard would help reduce the defensive deficiencies in Nash's game.

Another thought would be Cleveland or Toronto. They have big exceptions to absorb a player and they have their own picks as well as Miami's to play with. Not sure either team is looking for a short term fix though.

So Orlando is gonna put Nelson on the bench? No way Nash goes to Orlando with Jameer there.

I don't think a trade will happen, but I'd bench Nelson for Nash in a heartbeat.

Suns fans are loony if they think we will trade Smith to them much less anything else. The best they can get is Marvin, possibly Jamal but it depends.

I'd trade Smith to the Suns... but we'd also have to shed Bibby's contract, get Robin Lopez, and acquire some picks.

Hey I might do that.
Just no giving up of first round picks. Rights to swap first round picks at best.

I wouldn't, we get a lot worst and Lopez contract extension will be high. I wouldn't do it for Nash and Lopez either. Too risky. I just wouldn't trade our core players. Horford, Smith, and Joe. The rest is up for trade, including Jamal who probably won't be back.
