Brandon Inge signs next is Peralta

Tigers signed him to a two-year, $11-million contract extension for a reason. (They have an option for a third year at $6 million; if they decline it, they can buy him out for $500,00, and yes, I know many of you are hoping for the buyout.)

Tigers are going to bring back shortstop Jhonny Peralta to play next to Inge. The question with Peralta is the length of the deal. The Tigers have until three days after the World Series to pick up Peralta's $7.5-million option; meanwhile, they can negotiate with the 28-year-old on a longer deal. If they don't agree on a multiyear contract, they will pick up that option.

I don't like peralta's range, and his batting avgerage is low so i would pass on him and bring in someone else.

Well at least we get the defensive upside, and the premium that we are we paying will just be a gamble that he pans out as a hitter. if he comes through then we make a big score, but the higher odds are that we just lose a small amount of millions. It seems like a pretty evenly fair bet to me, maybe even slightly in our favor because there is very little money gap to lose because of his defense, and the sky is the limit if he performs really well or freakishly well. Plus there aren’t any other 3B options in the FA market I’m assuming. If we are lucky enough to generate some trading action then hopefully we can finally land a solid SS and C for the future. We need some mega premium players to add to our infield somewhere.

Peralta sucks, and would only cost us a lot of money to block a cheap young prospect from gaining the field. There is nothing to be gained by spending money and a roster spot on him.

The Inge deal is fair. Not too much money and only 2 years, so I can't complain.

By bringing back Peralta, who i don't mind, we are virtually bringing back the same team as last year, which was pretty mediocre. I was kind of hoping to get a decent FA or two in here

I think the team is okay with our infield.... it's our outfield that needs work. We have Gullien, Magglio and Damon in the outfield at times and none of them could stay healthy or productive. Austin Jackson was our best outfielder as a rookie. I think we'll see the biggest changes there. As well as Alex Avila behind the plate fulltime.

I agree with management. Change the outfield, upgrade the bench and patch up the pitching rotation and we should be good to go. Having Magglio, Guillen, Inge all go down in the same week really hurt our team. No team would be able to overcome losing three starting guys for a long stretch.

Pitching, a lefty bat or two and an improved bench should really help us most of all. Moreso than switching shortstops.

Well we have AJ in center, and DD has already said Raburn will have a sizable role on the team. Boesch and Casper Wells are both young and cheap and likely big parts as well, so we have 4 guys already penciled in for a lot of playing time. How much change in the OF are you expecting? You think we are going to find TWO upgrades there? If only one, then that's hardly a change, and what do you propose they will do, overpay for somebody as a FA or trade for one?

Our team has been destroyed the last several years on the entire infield sans Cabrera. We have been getting clobbered there from 2B-3B-SS-C, that's FOUR positions that we are WEAK at right now. The OF is the last thing on the team we need to worry about. We have 4 giant glaring holes that we are staring at FOR CERTAIN, and we have more credible players to gamble on in the OF for next year than we do in the infield, and less positions to worry about with a max of 2 to worry about there.

Wasted money, would rather have the extra cash to put towards a real pro hitter like a Crawford or Dunn after we get Martinez.

So we ended up giving Inge and Peralta just about identical contracts....

Re-signing these two have very little effect on us going after some big bats IMO.

They signed these two, so that they wouldn't have to spend more money on lesser players. They can also still focus on going after the big names. Don't see the problem.

Actually, re-signing them helped us, because we were able to shore up two positions while restructuring Peralta's deal to give him less money, which should help Dombrowski spend more on free agency.

Dombrowski wants to do the same with Magglio. Re-sign him, but for alot less money. If he can do it, that would really open some salary and instead of one big free agent, maybe we sign two.

Rather let Mags go, and just focus on the other guys....

Rather have two of the other elite guys and a pitcher vs two elite guys and Mags

The Tigers didn't think they were in position to trade for better or sign better than Inge — and get better value.

The same goes for Peralta.

They're not saying he's the end-all-be-all of shortstops. Dombrowski openly admits that Peralta doesn't have the greatest range or even good range.

But he has good hands, is dependable on balls that he gets to, has a major-league arm — and to complement being an acceptable shortstop, he might drive in 80 runs.

The Tigers love the thought of getting some production at the seventh spot in the lineup.

Keep in mind that with 81 RBI this year, Peralta ranked third in that category among all major-league shortstops and first in the American League.
