Just for fun: If you were the Jays GM what would you do?

Post#1 » by Leolovinliberal » Tue Nov 9, 2010 1:34 am

Let me preface this thread by asking that we all go easy on one another and that there is no right or wrong, it's just a fun thread. That being said, I'll go first:

1. Jays trade Romero, Drabek and Lind to Reds for Votto and Aroldis Chapman, finally bringing in a hometown superstar
2. Sign Manny to a 1 year deal with an option for a second
3. Move Snider to the 3 hole full time
4. Drop Vernon down to 7th
5. Let Aaron Cibia play through his mistakes and play full time

Here's our lineup:

SS: Yunel Escobar
2b: Aaron Hill
LF: Travis Snider
1b: Joey V
RF: Bombeasta
DH: Manny
CF: Vernon
C: Aaron Cibia
3b: Encarnacion

Starting rotation (in no particular order)

Marcum
Morrow
RZep
Cecil
Mills, Hill, Stewart or rookie

Closer: Chapman

Bring back Barry Bonds to DH.

i think AA would do that trade with Reds too, but too bad Reds will laugh in your face.

if i was Jays GM, i'll just do small moves like adding a DH. i like the sound of manny if it's a 1 year deal, nothing more

Really, I thought that giving up two top of the rotation starters more than made up for the marginal difference between Votto and Lind; guess Chapman is the deal breaker in your opinion, huh?

There is a lot more than a marginal difference between Lind and Votto. Votto was voted the top offensive player in the NL last year with the Hank Aaron award, Lind was pretty terrible. Lind of 2009 is a lot closer to Votto last year, but there is still a big difference

You know that his last name is Arencibia and that his first name isn't Aaron, last name Cibia right? John Paul Arencibia

There's no way that the Reds give up Votto and Chapmen for pretty much anything. They're the 2 guys that the franchise is being built around.

I agree. Even Chapman alone is probably worth more than Drabek at this point. You'd need to add a top offensive product in there for the Reds to even give it a look. Also, I'd much rather have a hole in the line-up than have two holes in the starting rotation.

I'd personally prioritize trying to acquire an all-star caliber 3rd baseman using JPA as the centerpiece. I personally can't watch this guy swing at every single pitch and I feel like his batting avg is gonna struggle to stay above .200 in the big leagues.

This would also mean that I would most definitely attempt to keep John Buck.

u compare Votto and Lind as marginal difference. wow. Votto is the top offensive player in NL leading his team to playoffs. Lind is alright, not on his good year this year. good DHs belong in the 3-5 slots, and Lind definitely does not make that on a good team.

romero is alright, top 3 starter at most, not that much worth compared to the lights-out all-time hardest throwing pitcher EVER in mlb history.

on both accounts, the boat tips to the Reds' side.

Ok here I go

TOR trades
Cecil
Stewart
Jimenez
Jenkins

MIL Trades
Fielder (extended 5 years @ 60 mil)
Prospect B level

Tor signs: Scott Podsednik 1 year @ 2.5 mil w option for 2012 @ 3 mil

Tor Resigns: JoBau 1 year @ 7.5 mil

line- up

LF- Podsednik
SS- Escobar
3B- JoBau
1B- Fielder
CF- Wells
DH- Lind
RF- Snider
2B- Hill
C- JPA

(Lind and Fielder switch positions for half the games making Fielder the DH and Lind at 1B)

SP
1- Morrow
2- Romero
3- Marcum
4- Drabek
5- Zep

RP
Bucholtz
Camp
Jansen
Purcy
....... scrapheap pickups

I know that this team has the potential to be the worst defensive team in the league, but i think the unbelievable ability to score runs that this lineup has offsets that. Especially if you can find a plus defensive lead off type to play ether CF, RF, or 3B and adjust everyones position around that.

Total pay role would be around 95 mil

I would have to see how Votto does this season before pulling on the trigger on that type of deal. Everybody is comparing Lind and Votto. But what about Romero and Drabek?

Romero will only get better and we haven't seen anything from Drabek, but its still early and these two pitchers have a lot of growth. Plus I dunno much about Chapman, so if the idea for him to play closer then I would pass on that and hope McGowan can come back good enough to fill that role.

we did see a bit of Drabek at the end of the season, I wasn't that impressed, but I know it's still early. Chapman can definitely be a lethal closer. and i just lol @ the thought of McGowan becoming a closer.

chapman can just as easily blow his arm out. that 6 ft 2 frame isnt meant to be throwing 104mph. No thanks.
I'll take my chances with cost controlled romero and drabek. As for votto, if jays are ready next year. they can go after fielder or gonzalez in free agency (assuming the money is available, which in your case has to be if jays are trading for votto - there must be a long term deal in place).

Seeing as how I don't think we make our run next year, my plan would be conservative...

Sign Manny to be the DH (1 year deal with options for 2 more, similar to Gregg's contract structure)
Sign Berkman to be 1B (again, 1 year deal with options and buy-outs)
Move Bautista to 3rd (after signing him to a 1 year deal)
Bring up Thames to see what we have
Have JPA start to see what we have.
Maybe bring in a big name closer (Papelbon) if the opportunity arrises.
Use Drabek as the 5th starter

That would really be it. I would try to fill our bullpen internally and see if our players develop.

I don't know anything about the trade market really but if I was AA I would shop Lind and JPA to see if we can get a 3B or speedy OF. Maybe a Figgins type.

Lineup:
Escobar
Hill
Manny
Bautista
Berkman
Wells
Snider
JPA
Thames

Fielder will take alot more than 60 million over 5 to extend. Too much in my opinion. On the other hand there are a couple of high on base guys I'd like from the free agent pool

Here goes:

Marcum, Aaron Hill, Zep, Jenkins, Stewart for Soria and Greinke

Sign Orlando Hudson to whatever market value is, but give him 2 years (which no one else will)
Sign Victor Martinez 3/30ish (go as high as 3/40)
Sign Carlos Pena (bargain price right now)

Find a 3B or RF (Bautista takes the other slot)
Fill out the bullpen with whomever is left cheap but, bring Downs BACK. As long as we have Downs and Soria at the back end our bullpen will be offensively good.

I like the Pena signing...I dunno about the trade though.

Wonder how much Pena would get on the open market.
