OT: AL Gold Glove Winners

Post#1 » by gill612 » Wed Nov 10, 2010 2:29 am

Hey guys here is the list of AL gold glove winners. It seems as though it's almost as same as the AL All Star starting lineup. How can you say that these players are that good defensively just because of their offensive statistics. There must be some more deserving players out there.

C Joe Mauer, Twins
1B Mark Teixeira, Yankees
2B Robinson Cano, Yankees
3B Evan Longoria, Rays
SS Derek Jeter, Yankees
OF Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners
OF Carl Crawford, Rays
OF Franklin Gutierrez, Mariners
P Mark Buehrle, White Sox

The Jeter one is just stupid. Now there's a guy who really didn't deserve it.

Derek Jeter doesn't win Gold Gloves, Gold Glove wins him

...that doesn't make any sense but you get the point .

i think they shouldn't give gold gloves at every position...a lot position players are undeserving..and are given just for the sake of filling the award...

Jeter has to be one of the most overrated SS of this era.

Cue that clip of him diving into the stands in that playoff game years ago.

Jeter hasnt deserved at least his last three gold gloves, but all members of the baseball media have the biggest collective hard-on for him its disturbing.

So when does this start invalidating the gold glove award in general?
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Rafael Palmeiro won the 1B Gold Glove in 1999. That year he played 28 games at 1B and 135 at DH.

In other words, the award was a joke years ago. Making it look any more meaningless would be impossible.

This award like the Selke award in hockey stopped being about being good at your position defensively but about rewarding good offensive players who didn't quite make it for MVP awards. If it was legit the list would actually be populated with players most fans would rarely see play and the league has not interest in promoting people like John MacDonald.

if thats the case, our prospect Hechevaria, would have been better off signing in NY..... i think he rejected them because they were set at SS with Jeter.

now he has a problem in Toronto, with Escobar

................. oh, well, depth cant be bad

Seeing Jeter's name reminded me of the NBA's All-NBA defencive teams.
"I definitely knew he traveled, but I didn't know they were going to call it. That was one of them situations in which a great player made a move...and they called the call. And I was like, 'Oh, man, there is a God.'

Think we've long since passed that point. At least Gutierrez actually won this year.

Do you think he would have if Torii Hunter hadn't been moved to RF? Not that Torii Hunter would have deserved it over him, just that moving to RF hurts Hunter's "reputation" as a defensive player.

Probably not, and the irony is that Gutierrez was less deserving this year than last. But having won one, he can pencil in the award for the next decade, even if he ends up in a wheelchair.

I have sort of always wondered why they don't have scouts vote for player awards - esp gold glove. I figure no one would know more about the players than advanced scouts that see the whole league all the time.

This award unfortunately is voted on by people who they are most familiar with, the "stars", generally the more popular the player, the more you're likely to see of them and hence they get voted for. It is often that players offensive prowess that draws the attention and therefore the award.

Which is obviously ass backwards.

Great write up by Rob Neyer about Jeter being undeserving.

Of course, it's not just us. Nobody who really follows baseball believes that Jeter is an outstanding defensive player. The Yankees, who see him every day, don't believe that. The writers who cover the Yankees every day don't believe that. Frankly, I'm not sure the managers and the coaches who actually voted for Jeter believe that.

I think they keep giving him the award as a gesture of respect. In a different sort of society, they might simply bow in his presence, then kiss one of his World Series rings. Or cross themselves whenever Game 3 of the Yankees' 2001 Division Series is mentioned. Instead they somewhat mindlessly give him their Gold Glove support every year, even as everyone who's actually paying attention knows the Yankees would prevent more runs if almost anyone else were playing shortstop.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
