Aaron Murray, the top-rated quarterback in Florida picks UGA

The plan all along for Georgia was to pass on quarterbacks in 2008 and grab two in 2009.

Today the plan worked.

Aaron Murray, the top-rated quarterback in Florida, held a press conference at Plant Senior High School in Tampa, Fla. and committed to Georgia.

He is the ninth player to commit to Georgia. He and Zach Mettenberger of Oconee County High School, are the two quarterbacks in the class.

Murray picked Georgia over Florida and UCLA. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Murray has a contrasting style from that of Mettenberger. While Mettenberger is a true drop-back passer with a big arm, Murray provides some speed with the ball and can be utilized as a runner much like Logan Gray or D.J. Shockley.

Murray rushed for more than 900 yards and threw for more than 4,000 yards as a junior and was named the state

Bobby Bowden and Randy Shannon weren't even in on him? Damn. How the mighty have fallen.

A coup for Georgia if he provides a smooth transition from the Matt Stafford era.

Very solid pickup for Georgia. I know ND was very high on him, but it appears that the feeling was not reciprocal.

With two 5 star QB's in the fold, it's going to be tough to attract elite talent at the position.

When either one plays at more than a 2-star level, yes. Right now if I were a 5-star QB I would look at Notre Dame and think I could start no later than after my frosh year.

Back to the Dawgs--weren't UGA fans all scared that Richt would be great at Xs and Os but not be able to attract elite talent? Or am I confusing him with someone else?

Clausen was one of the more celebrated HS recruits of the decade. Dayne Crist might have even more potential and he hasn't even gotten on campus yet. ND's gotten the best pro-style QB in the country two years in a row, there's no one in this class that could have any expectations of rocketing up the QB depth chart. I think for the next couple seasons, QB recruiting will be raw kids or guys who will forgo starting at a small school just to go to ND (like Joe Montana's kid, Nate).

Yeah--people I know down there are real high on Crist. They nearly mutinied on Claussen last year and it sounds like he still doesn't get it. Freaking amazing arm on that kid though.

Georgia is set at QB for at least the next 5 years. I don't think QB will ever be a problem for Mark Richt, though.

Nope. They should be championship contenders for the next 5 years also.

While the Gators are set at QB for at least 1, hopefully 2 more years and have the GA kid Cam Newton and FL kid John Brantley backing up, it would have been nice to get this guy just in case Cam Newton doesn't work out.
