The Falcons officially signed rookie QB Matt Ryan on Tuesday, agreeing to terms on a six-year deal.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but ESPN reported that the deal likely is worth $72M, including $34.5M in guaranteed cash.

That means he will make more than Tom Brady, and a whole lot more than #1 pick Jake Long. You can bet a lot of owners are ticked about the latter.

I like Matt Ryan and I do think he's going to be a very good NFL QB, but the Falcons just totally annihilated the salary slotting system that has worked fairly well. By giving him this much $$, it only adds more immediate pressure on Ryan to be freaking awesome right away.

Do you have any idea why we would do this?

Just to get him signed early?

They wanted to get the 6-year deal done ASAP because of the CBA opt out, which impacts length of deal. I haven't quite digested how, but that's what everyone is saying.

Arthur Blank & Co. desperately wanted to avoid any possibility of a holdout or nasty negotiations and the bad press that comes with it. They feel that Ryan is the giant eraser for the stain of Vick and the recent failures of the team, and the sooner he can be paraded around and starting, the better.

Matt was on 680 the fan this morning. While he seems like a great guy, I'm just not sure if he's going to move this team towards the right direction, and I'm rather numb about the amount of money he received.

He does seem like a genuinely good guy and his teammates are going to love him. My main concern about him is how he'll handle the rebuilding process and the inevitable losing that is going to happen.

Rebuilding will take time. But Matt Ryan is the right QB for this team. He won't disappoint in the long run.

This is good for Atlanta. They have officially moved out of the Michael Vick era. Congrats are due to the Falcons.
