Tucker agrees with Walsh: Patriots practiced with IR players

Ross Tucker, a former offensive lineman who played for five teams in a seven-year NFL career, reiterated Thursday that he believes that New England used players on the injured reserve list in practices, which violates league rules.

Former Patriots video assistant Matt Walsh, in a meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell last week, said that a Patriots player on injured reserve practiced when he wasn't allowed to in 2001.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday, "The Walsh allegation is still under review."

"Basically, the Patriots would put a player on IR, knowing it meant he couldn't play in a game or practice with the team for the remainder of the season. By skirting the rules and practicing him anyway, it allowed them to develop his skills during the year. A side benefit is that they were also able to give some of the older players less repetitions and, therefore, additional rest."

what do you think of this, is it that big of a deal or just overblown?

how serious is it to use IR players in practice, i dont really get what the implications are.

It's pretty huge. Look at this star-studded IR list. Jabari Holloway wouldn't be half the player he is now if he didn't get those 30 practice reps back in 2001.

Injurygate could in all likelihood result in multiple fines and the loss of at least the next 3 first round picks for the Cheatriots. Assuming we live in a just world, of course.

No, but seriously, this is a total non-issue. I'm sure there is a standard fine in place for this sort of thing. But really, who cares? What is giving an IR guy some practice reps even going to do? Dude can't even play the rest of the season because he's on IR. It's probably just guys playing through injuries, or younger players just standing in for older players who take a rest during practice.

What is the upside to giving Jabari Holloway (or any player) practice reps if he's on IR

I'm sure it would.

It's against the rules.
