OT: Cam Newton / Auburn

Post#1 » by zmanishere11 » Wed Nov 10, 2010 3:43 pm

Interesting week for this kid.

MAJOR allegations of both him cheating while at Florida and he and his father shopping around for the best "deal" (aka $$$) during the transfer process from JC.

I'm most interested to see how Auburn handles this in the middle of a National Title chase. I gotta believe if someone paid Newton to come to Auburn, the NCAA is going to find out about it (bank records / new cars / ect) at this point - it's too big a story.

Let's hope if it's true, the figure out quickly, boot these fools from bowl play and move bucky on up :)

The cheating thing is dumb and petty. I honestly couldn't care less if he did that at Florida.

The pay to play issue though is huge, though I doubt it's resolved this season. If anything happens it'll be down the road, long after Cam is a top ten NFL pick next April.

I don't know where he'll end up being drafted but I wouldn't touch him with a first rood pick. Phenomenal athlete but I haven't seen him throw the ball consistently enough to justify a number 1.

Reports breaking that he'll be suspended by the NCAA 'within the next 3 to 4 hours.' Came out of ESPN Dallas.

They must have some pretty overwhelming evidence to hand a suspension down that quickly.

Said report was apparently a hoax

ClayTravisBGID Just talked to Ian, he said on air, "With this story, something big could happen in 3-4 hours." Blogger ran with quote as news.

Could someone give me a quick recap of this whole situation from the top?

Highly recruited, went to Florida. Was booted because he was caught with a stolen laptop. Went to a junior college and then Auburn, where he's been a freak.

Now there are allegations he cheated numerous times at UF. It looks like a smear campaign from Florida and they're rightfully getting **** for it.

That isn't the big one though. Last week a former Mississippi State QB claimed that a representative of Newton asked for $200 grand for Newton to play for them. Newton originally wanted to go to MS but abruptly changed his mind.

Now two MS coaches have told Joe Schadd of ESPN that they were told by Newton's dad that it would take more than a scholarship to play ball. When Cam Newton called to tell them he was going to Auburn he apparently said he would have liked to play for MS but the money from Auburn was too good.

Those are the allegations anyway.

Honestly, I have no problems with players trying to get money minus it being illegal part. They are bringing in way to much money not to be compensated. Yes, they get "$10Ks worth of scholarships" but to a lot of players, it means crap. That's like your job trying to pay you in something that you can't sell or don't know how to use. I know a lot of players get use of that education, but what is the point for those who don't want it. There is too much fake purity in college sports, when really its as corrupt or worse than pro-sports.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this thing get fast-tracked a bit. I'd imagine the NCAA wouldn't want this huge cloud hanging over the BCS Championship game if Auburn were to make it. Not that they'd have any say in an investigation or possible punishment, but I'm sure the Heisman voters would love to see some type of investigation happen sooner rather than later too. I realize it will be hard to come up with concrete answers in a short time frame, but I think they're damn sure gonna try...

THIS
For the players who are using these schools as stepping stones for the pros I don't blam them one bit for asking for money. The school's are raping these kids, wait scratch that they're raping these adults. Sure they get a scholarship where they go major in communication, but look at all the money they are bringing in to the school. If they get hurt, that's it it's done. The allusion of purity in college sports is disgusting, it's the U.S. bottom line is the dollar sign.

I don't necessarily have a problem with kids trying to get money or the schools offering it. But if you do break the rules then you should have to pay the price. It's the cost of doing business.

So it's ok for schools to offer/kids to demand money as long as they don't get caught? I don't think that makes any sense.

I long ago accepted that a lot of the top athletes get more than a scholarship. I don't think it's "ok" but it's the nature of the industry. If I found out John Clay took money I wouldn't be upset at Wisconsin or Clay for breaking the rule, I'd be pissed that they weren't smart enough to cover it up.

I think schools shouldn't be allowed to pay athletes, but there should be no rules as to how athletes acquire income or gifts off campus. Gifts from boosters, money from endorsements, autograph signings, appearances, etc. Who the hell is the NCAA to tell someone how they can or cannot provide for their family?

Besides that, if you make these kinds of things legit, it will help eliminate a lot of the sleazy agents and others who currently do it under the table.

I think they should simply allow registered NFL and NBA agents pay players.

Haha, I was going to say, it must've been terrible for it to get pulled that quickly.
