Re: Shields = KR
I think someone already mentioned this in another thread, but I love it. Now if we could just find someone to take over the punt return duties, maybe that's why Starks was activated.

He had problems with punts in the preseason, not kick returns. They are completely different.

To be fair, he had problems with both, but his problems with punts were WAY worse.

Jordy wasn't the poster child of consistency either. I don't think it's worth the injury, but whatever.

It was right after halftime I believe. Great burst and got it out to the 45 iirc. Love this move. Huge explosion and a huuge upgrade over Jordy

Re: Shields = KR
I like it too. I keep thinking back to the Pick-6 he had in the scrimmage, looked pretty flashy during the return.
Didn't they bring him in here in the first place for returns of some sort? Probably punt returns, but it's been said, punt returning is much different than kick returning. He has the potential for the home-run every time he catches it, and possibly getting the ball to the 35-40 more often then we have become a custom to.
Just hold on to the damn thing.

Re: Shields = KR
If he can hold onto the ball, this is a great move. Homerun potential everytime he touches the rock.

Yea, i'm more worried about the injury potential than i am worried Shields will turn the ball over.
I can understand that good teams can't play overly scared of injuries and other teams use starters on special teams whether it be as a returner or in coverage. That said, having two of our three best corners handling all of the return duties, it doubles the chance of one getting hurt. Then we'd be in the boat of having to find out whether Ted made an error in waiving Harris as either Bush or Underwood suddenly became a nearly every down player in the defense as the nickle back.

He averaged 13 yards on 3 returns. That's pretty bad. And now we're risking injury with him when he's playing pretty good football on the defensive end. Add in his ball security woes and this is a bad decision.

Re: Shields = KR
We have our corner who is playing at an elite level returning punts and our rookie corner who looks like he could potentially turn into a starter returning kicks... That seems like a recipe for disaster.
I agree with the way this organization does a lot of things. Assigning the kick and punt returners is not one of those things though.

I don't like starting two of our top 3 corners at KR/PR, but whatever.

Agreed. I will note, though, that I'm fine with this move - I just want Tramon off of PR.

Re: Shields = KR
Yeah, if TT doesn't draft a guy next year that can be a last RB/WR/CB and be a stud at returning kicks I might go crazy.
The deal with guys with this kind of speed is easy - get them into space and good things will happen.

He didn't really have ball security issues beyond not being able to cleanly catch the ball. His return yardage was also awful because he bobbled the ball for so long.
If he got that cleaned up there is no reason to think he can't be a weapon as a KR. I think his issues were mostly mental to be honest.
