What are the Titans doing? (RBs)

Post#1 » by NeedsMoreCheese » Mon May 26, 2008 4:41 pm

Theyve been doing this for a few years now it seems. They try to get like 4 RBs that will play (though on game day not all are active) and basically ignore WR?
Last week it was Dayne they were after, now its Kevin Jones.

They already have Lendale White and Chris Henry. Add to that they have a running QB in Vince Young. Then they spent a first this year on another RB. Whats the logic here?
Consider the past three drafts theyve taken a RB in the first 50 picks.
Going into that one in 2006 they already have Chris Brown and Travis Henry. So they add Lendale White with the 45th pick (and Young as a running QB).
Going into the 07 draft they have Chris Brown, Lendale White (And Young). So they add Chris Henry with the 50th pick
Going into 08 draft they have Lendale White, Chris Henry (And Young).
So with the 24th pick they add Chris Johnson.
Also now theyre looking to add another guy who has been either a starter or a 2nd RB in FA?
I understand injuries and its nice to have depth but isnt this overkill? It wouldnt be so bad if they were fine at other positions, but they have no WRs that can really be considered a #1 at this point. (and some are marginally acceptable as even a #2)

(I assume they would have taken Sweed had he not gone the spot in front of them in the 2nd round, and that would have made alot more sense. Maybe they didnt consider him worth it in the first round but for one thing, it wouldnt have even been a stretch, and for another, couldnt they have traded up or even down to get him?)

This doesnt bother me, I just figured its quite an interesting topic to discuss.

I agree, why do they need 4 RBs who could be in the top 2 on the depth chart on almost other teams? Do they really want to deal with guys complaining about playing time?

If they get Kevin Jones, I would hope that they might give Chris Johnson some reps at WR. The guy is electric and explosive (similar to Reggie Bush in size and skill sets) and could give Young a deep threat. But he also needs a big target, and Lavelle Hawkins isn't one..but the addition of Crumpler should help.

Chris Johnson might wind up with more receptions than carries. Like CJ said, they're likely to give him lots of reps at WR. But he also fills a glaring need for a 3rd down back and receiving threat out of the backfield. One of the things Vince Young really needed was a checkdown back who can catch a pass 4 yards downfield facing the LOS, turn it around and make a big gain upfield. The Titans haven't had that, and with Young's accuracy issues downfield and inadequate field vision, having a guy like that can really help their offense.

The drafting of Chris Henry when they already had White and Brown was the headscratcher to me. I saw the need for White at the time, and I can buy Johnson this year. But that one makes no sense, esp. when they didn't really give him much of a chance to do anything.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

I guess I wasnt really aware of that, it makes alot more sense then.

Then again it still doesnt explain Dayne or Jones.
On Jones side too though, wasnt he looking to go somewhere where theres a shot at a decent amount of PT? Isnt that the reason hes still even available? That certainly doesnt sound like the Titans at all.
