Wolves waive Ager, plan to sign Sundiata Gaines

Post#1 » by cpfsf » Fri Nov 12, 2010 12:47 am

http://www.startribune.com/sports/wolves/blogs/107339043.html

The Wolves this afternoon waived combo guard Mo Ager, a move that paves the way for them to sign former Utah Jazz and former NBA Development League guard Sundiata Gaines.Gaines is the player the Wolves targeted after yesterday's four-man point guard workout in Sacramento. Gaines is listed at 6-1, but he's strong and well built. The former Georgia guard also likes to push the ball, can get to the foul line, will play some defense but isn't a great shooter.

* Big Al Jefferson will be in TNT's Atlanta studio with Kevin McHale (the guy who brought him to Minnesota), Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith late after tonight's doubleheader. (I believe the segment is being taped earlier this evening and then shown later).

* ESPN's Outside the Lines will profile Wolves prospect Ricky Rubio on Sunday at 8 a.m. The segment is titled "Basketball's Man or Myth." Among those in the show who think he's overrated is Eric Musselman, former Wolves assistant coach and son of the former Wolves coach.

I'm intrigued to see how he goes. I always thought Gaines was taller than 6'1.

Athletic and can push it but cannot shoot. Seems almost like Bassy-lite other than he is stronger.

Personally, I am not a fan. I think in this situation we either sign a vet/mentor type. To fill in barely or someone with a higher upside.

Anyway, does anyone know if this is eastern time?

Nope, central (its a MN article, why would they give a non-local time?)

For some reason I thought ESPN wrote the article even though it was obvious it was ST.

Definitely a cool video about Sundiata Gaines. It must be a little rough knowing that he's basically trying out for a 1 week role. I don't get why we really even bothered with waiving Ager to get Gaines if Jonny is coming back next week anyway.
Thriving on mediocrity since '89.

This is puzzling to me as well. It's even more odd that we took the time to call in four PG's for a workout in SAC.

Has anyone considered the possibility that we may have a trade lined up this week that includes Telfair or Flynn?

If there's no trade coming (and maybe even if there was), I agree with Rev that I'd have prefered getting a player for the vet/mentor on the tiny, short, vet min contract.

My thoughts are
* Ager seemed lost most of time in the offense.
* Flynn will be brought back very slowly.
* Luke will not be ready to go yet for another 10-14 days
* Many veterans may not want to come here - even if that is there only choice.
* Sunny Gaines will not expect minutes where as a vet might
* Sebastian's play lately has been a pleasant surprise but Rambis is probably hoping the inconsistent, shot happy player doesn't re-emerge with Ager or a gimpy point guard as his only choices.
I've been a fan since the beginning and I will be until my end.
