Who do you want in the Draft?

Post#1 » by Bucksfans1and2 » Sat Nov 13, 2010 11:40 pm

Defense

I think the most glaring need is another pass rusher at OLB

There are quite a few prospects at the position but with where we're picking there won't be many of the elite prospects left.

Robert Quinn (UNC)
Ryan Kerrigan (Purdue)
Allen Bailey (Miami)
Akeem Ayers (UCLA)
Travis Lewis (Oklahoma)
Bruce Carter (UNC)
Von Miller (Texas A&M)
Justin Houston (Georgia)

Are all slated to go before us. I doubt they all do but it gives you an idea of how stacked the OLB position is.

Greg Jones is another guy that might be gone. He plays MLB for MSU, but I think he's the type of player that will excel where he's playing.

Jeremy Beal (Oklahoma) is a possibility and will almost for sure be available.

The rest of the guys seem to be more than a bit of a reach though.

Mason Foster (Washington)
Steven Friday (VT)
Ross Homan (OSU)
Adrain Robinson (Temple)
Dontay Moch (Nevada)
Mark Herzlich (BC)

Are all expected to be picked in the second and third rounds.

I would trade pretty much all of our picks for a shot at Kerrigan.

DLine is pretty much stacked going into next year. MLBs could use another guy (Greg Jones or Casey Matthews :D )

Safety were pretty good with Bigby, Collins, and Pepprah.

I wouldn't stick my nose up at a good CB though. Shields and Tramon are both very good, but Woodson is getting older, and wearing down.

Offense:

We're set at QB.

WE could use an improvement at RB. Though admittedly I drive the Ryan Grant is overrated bandwagon.

More depth on the O-Line is always needed, especially at Tackle.

WR: Driver hasn't looked very good this year. Jennings has been prone to dissapearences. James Jones is as inconsistent as ever, and Jordy Nelson is nothing special. Another WR would be awesome especially if they can also be an improvement as a returner.

We're pretty much stacked at TE and FB.

I actually think the majority of those OLBs you mentioned drop.

Ayers isn't much of a pass rusher, and I actually think he's a better fit as a strongside OLB in a 4-3. Lewis and Carter are WLBs in a 4-3. Quinn is a true 4-3 DE. Even Kerrigan is probably going to be taken by a team running the 4-3.

This isn't a great group of pass rushing 3-4 OLBs. Miller and Houston are the best right now, with Houston being my favorite. I doubt he makes it to us though.

In a thin OT group, the best guys wouldn't stack up well against the top OTs of the previous few years. Still, I doubt a legit first round talent falls to our pick.

The position I think is deep and could give us good value is the 5-technique lineman. There are a good number of guys in this class who would be good fits as DEs in our 3-4 with the ability to play inside when we run a 4 man front.

Allen Bailey
Adrian Clayborn
Da'Quan Bowers
Marcell Dareus
Cameron Heyward
Cameron Jordan
Nick Fairley,

Bowers, Fairley and Clayborn are probably top ten picks. Dareus, maybe, but his production hasn't been there.

My hope is Miller or Houston drop, or Green Bay moves up for either. But standing pat we might get a good lineman.

All I know is I want claymaker's bro. I don't care about his college career we just need more of that DNA on this team.

agreed, we need Matthews on this team. His brother seems like he's actually having a good year too.

A few comments on the other posts…

The WR’s have been better than the comments in the first post…Driver is hurt; until he pulled his quad, he was fine- Jennings is having a good year, he hasn’t disappeared for stretches. Rodgers just liked throwing to Finley a lot for the first five games… Jones will probably be a FA after the season & I don’t see the Packers signing him to a bigger money contract with Jennings, Driver & Nelson in the fold for 2011, so a WR early in the draft would nice.

How can you mention 5-technique DE's without mentioning the greatest 5-technique DE in the history of the NCAA--- J.J Watt!- :D ....I think Thompson covered DE real well in the last draft, but if the Pack can get a like Watt or Jordan in the 2nd round, that would be nice.

I don’t know if little Claymaker has the same talent as his brother (who does?!?), but the Clay’s are late bloomers. CMIII wasn’t Claymaker until his Sr year at USC, so who knows.

Myself, I really like the idea of adding another freak type pass rushing guy at OLB to team up with CMIII. This would really super charge the Packs defense… The guy I like is Von Miller from Shermville A&M - Miller is an unstoppable force rushing the passer & his skill set translates to the NFL—why he went back for his senior season is beyond me.

Even though it means nothing, Draft Countdown has the Pack taking Miller with the 31st pick in the 1st round- They did mess up on the pick position, everybody knows the Pack will be picking 32nd.

Casey Matthews is having a good year but he would be an ILB in a 3-4. I've said I want him a lot but right now we have a lot of depth at ILB, a lot of that will depend on what happens with Hawk's contract, if he extends and we keep everyone else I don't see ILB as a need at all. OLB will be a much greater need than ILB.

That being said having the Matthews brothers and being able to knickname them the Super Smash Bros. is perfectly fine with me!

Offensively, I would love to get a playmaking running back. If we could find a big time offensive lineman in the first round (kind of like how Bulaga fell to us this season), then I would be happy with that pick as well.

Defensively we need an outside linebacker and possibly a strong safety. I am not sure how the coaching staff views Burnett - or even Bigby. However, he has to be there, we can't bomb draft picks. I would rather add a great player at a position where we have depth than add a player who is likely to be a bust.

Personally, I like Michael Floyd a lot. He just needs to stay healthy. He, Cameron Jordan, and Ras-I Dowling should all be available around when we're picking and all would be good fits for our system. I still like Greg Jones, too.

I also think Sam Acho could be a terrific outside backer in our system and would love to grab him in round 3.

Tough to get a read on Von Miller since he's been playing hurt all season. Gotta love his toughness, though.

Austin Pettis is another receiver that impresses me. Doesn't have great speed, but his hands are awesome and he knows how to use his great size. I really think this team needs a big possession receiver to help on 3rd down and in the red zone.

Illinois' Mikel Leshoure looks like a pretty good fit at RB. Natural pass catcher, good size, and is a one-cut and go type. I think Shane Vareen out of Cal could be pretty dynamic, but Thompson won't look at him. USC's Allen Bradford is a potential steal, too.

McShay thinks there's only one 1st round WR candidate, Green. I think he's an idiot and WR could be absurdly deep. I wouldn't object to taking any of the top six guys in Green, Jones, Floyd, Baldwin, Broyles or Blackmon.

If one of Jones, Floyd, Baldwin is there when we pick... we gotta pull the trigger. Jennings opposite any of those three would be lethal.

He could be an excellent trade-up candidate in the 2nd. He's been my favorite RB prospect for awhile now.

I forgot Blackmon was eligible. He's beastly, and the mere fact that McShay thinks there's only one WR worthy of a 1st round pick tells me there are at least a dozen. I can't believe that guy gets paid to evaluate drafts.

Wanted to bump this. I've seen a lot in the past few weeks.

3-4 outside linebacker:

First, Von Miller has been a beast lately. He started off the season playing on a bum ankle, but lately he's been a terror, even with opposing defenses keying on him a lot. If he was our choice in the first round, I probably wouldn't be disappointed.

Second, a lot of draftniks have remarked that Nevada's Dontay Moch is soft, uninstinctive, and only a straight line speed guy. These criticisms are not completely unfounded, but unlike guys like Vernon Gholston and Aaron Maybin (both prospects I didn't like), Moch is not being discussed as a 1st round pick, nor does he disappear for hugely long stretches like Gholston did at Ohio State. Plus, I like Moch's potential ability to play in space a LOT more than I did with Gholston or Maybin. In the Boise State/Nevada game, I saw Boise State giving a lot of attention to Moch and him still winning a good percentage of the time. Nevada moved him around, inside and outside, and Boise State had no answer for his explosive speed off the snap. In the 3rd or 4th round, I'm all for swinging for the fences on this guy.

Wide Receiver

I think there are some pretty distinct characteristics the Packers look for in receivers. Good hands, some polish as a route runner, ability to get YAC, and Jennings and Driver are at about the minimum the Packers will look at size-wise. Having said that, this draft is loaded and the Packers should be in the market given James Jones' impending free agency and the fact that Driver is getting up there. Here's how I rank this year's crop.

1. Justin Blackmon - Will physically dominate at this level. Similar to Dez Bryant.
2. AJ Green - Polished player will go way before the Packers pick.
3. Jonathan Baldwin - Awesome size, very good athleticism, very good hands, excellent at tracking the ball, making adjustments, and going up and getting it down the field, good YAC. Needs some polish as a route runner.
4. Julio Jones - Similar to Baldwin but not as good, IMO. His hands aren't as good and he's not as aggressive in going and getting the ball. He's a super talent but disappears for stretches.
5. Michael Floyd - Floyd has put on weight and seems to have lost some of his burst. He's still a good receiver and has some in common with Baldwin.
6. Ryan Broyles - I love Broyles after the catch and as a returner. I'd love him operating out of the slot.
In the middle rounds, I like East Carolina's Dwayne Harris. He's similar to Broyles - athletic, awesome after the catch, and a good returner. Boise State's Pettis is impressive too. He has good size (knows how to use it to his advantage), good route running ability, good hands, and is smart. He reminds me of Blair White, who is doing pretty well for himself in Indianapolis.

My 1st round wish list, given where we'll probably be picking (in no particular order):
Justin Blackmon, Jonathan Baldwin, Cameron Jordan, Von Miller, Mike Pouncey, and Ryan Kerrigan. There are a few more I wouldn't be disappointed with.

I'm ready for the draft already, it's probably one of my favorite times of the year. I haven't watched a ton of college football outside of the Big Ten. One guy I'd be interested in seeing the Packers look into as a potential Daryn Colledge replacement is John Moffitt.

I can't see Kerrigan at outside linebacker. If he's playing in the 3-4 it'll probably be as a 5 technique. This draft is 5 technique heavy in the big 10 alone, and hopefully we'll resign our own guys as well. I think Kerrigan is an awesome player and all but I can't see us taking him. He doesn't fit.

Taylor is another guy I don't like based on position but unlike with Kerrigan there are some red flags from some of the scouting reports I've read about him. Mainly that he struggles against quicker tackles and that he occasionally gets reached and pinned inside. I think he'll be a good player in a few years, but not great and not an immediete impact player.

Pouncey at Guard and not Center is a productive player in the NFL, but I'm not in love with him.

Blackmon, I hate taking WRs in the first round and I'd take him without a second thought.

Baldwin, if he shows me something in the 40 I wouldn't hesitate. He's awesome at going up for the ball. Much better than anyone on our roster. Only question I have is speed. I don't see him out running DBs too much whenever I've watched him, which admittedly isn't often.

Kerrigan will probably go to a 4-3 team because he'll be higher up on their boards, but I think he can absolutely play outside linebacker for what the Packers ask their outside backers to do. I'd prefer Von Miller, though.

I've seen enough from Baldwin that, while he might not be the best straight line runner, he's an explosive athlete and can get separation. He does a good job with short area quickness for being somewhat of a long strider.
