Blue Jays Trade Farquhar and Magnuson for Rajai Davis

Post#1 » by KPJR » Wed Nov 17, 2010 9:38 pm

The Blue Jays are on the verge of acquiring outfielder Rajai Davis from the Athletics, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Minor league reliever Trystan Magnuson is one of the players heading to Oakland in the deal, MLBTR has learned.

If we get him that makes bautista moving over to third almost a sure thing.

Just saw it on theScore ticker confirming that it's done. Does this mean Bautista goes to 3rd? I remember hearing that he prefers to play in the outfield.

He had an all star year in 2009, 360 OBP, 305 average, 41 steals. Alex is hoping he can regain that form and all we're giving up is a 25 year old noodle armed reliever, there's no practically no risk involved.

If Magnuson is all we had to give up than this is an amazing move. Davis gives us a legit leadoff guy that can get on base and steal bases.

I guess this means Bautista's moving to 3rd or that Lind's moving to 1st.

He doesn't get on base enough to be a leadoff hitter on a good team, so I do hope they aren't planning on starting him.

He is better than Fred Lewis, though, and would be the perfect 4th OF.

I don't know, a 30 yr old with an OBA of .320. Seems like a stopgap solution. I was hoping for a long term solution.

How do you know they don't just plan to use him as a 4th OF?

Otherwise, yeah, he'd just be what Fred Lewis was to this team.

I hope they use him as a 4thOF. But then there are other questions: do you really trade prospects (B level I admit) for a 30 year old 4thOF. I thought we were rebuilding? Is it best to have a 'Rich Man's Fred Lewis' blocking our OF prospects such as Thames, etc... I don't know.

I fully expect Davis to be a 4th OF in the role DeWayne Wise had last season. I mean, who exactly would he start over? Wells? Snider? Bautista? Even if they moved Bautista to 3B, do you really think AA would have Davis (.697 OPS last season) start in the one of the corners? Highly unlikely.

lol a 25 year old noodle armed reliever in AA is not a B prospect, more like C- or D+. I'm not sure you can say with a 100% certainty that Davis is a 4th outfielder, he had an all star year in 2009.

Magnuson isn't noodle-armed, and Rajai Davis is pretty awful. Yay, he steals bases...unfortunately, he can't hit, doesn't draw walks, and his defense was terrible last year. But yay, he steals bases.

****, and we gave up Farquhar as well? I just don't get this.

I don't think the team will move Wells out of CF unless something drastic happens (i.e. the team acquires an all-star CF and Wells agrees to move). Davis does not strike me as a player that the organization will value that greatly. So if Wells is clearly planted in CF, then that leaves Davis to play one of the corners, and his offense simply does not compensate for any defensive value he may have. He is basically a more split neutral Reed Johnson with stolen bases. Fourth outfielder? Great. He has speed, can play all 3 OF positions, and isn't going to be a liability offensively. As a starting OF? No thanks. The Jays can, and hopefully will, do better.

I highly doubt AA 1) thinks that highly of him, and 2) would make such a decision about an outfield spot in November.

Shawn Hill is gone, officially

Unofficially, looks like Fred Lewis, too.

The problem is...I'm not sure they make this deal unless they intend to play him full-time, though. Assuming Bautista moves to 3B, he is the 3rd best option they have there right now.

If they don't get anybody better, I'd really consider platooning him with Eric Thames. Raj has pretty major splits.
