How can you be a top 3 PG with a .480 TS%
That's right. Rondo is the least efficient starting PG in the NBA.
I am sitting here thinking, why the hell do people think that he's a top 3 PG in the NBA? Hell, some people are saying that he's the best PG in the NBA.
Yes, he gets a lot of assists and he's great at that. I am not denying it. With as many finishers and ELITE shooters as Boston, Rondo is absolutely a good fit for Boston. Pierce, KG, Allen are all getting slower but they are still some of the best shooters at their positions and will go great with anyone who is good at penetrating.
It's not like Rondo and the Celtics are invincible. They are very beatable and they often lose BECAUSE of Rondo.
For those who think that he's a top 3 PG in the NBA or even the best, do you honestly think that Chris Paul wouldn't be able to do the same in Boston? If CP3 was playing in Boston, Boston would completely destroy the league. Or Deron? Westbrook? Nash? Harris? Nelson? Hell, I even think Devin Harris would be better for the Celtics.
Rondo is a system player. He's blessed by elite shooters in Allen, Pierce, and KG. Not many PGs get those kinds of options on the wing to pass to.
Let's not forget that Rondo was terrible in the USA camp. I was worried that he would make the team because I knew he'd stink it up in the international game where shooting is a must. He would have hurt team USA.
Rondo is a top 10 PG in the NBA. He's not top 3, not top 5. He certainly isn't anywhere near the best. If he's the best PG in the NBA, this "golden age" for PGs is sad.

Well, I personally have him anywhere from 3-5... behind Paul and Williams and right there with Rose and Nash

He's inefficient but he's low volume, so his shooting isn't hurting them at all. The reason his TS% is so low is because he's shooting 47% from the FT line somehow. His FG percentage is 46 and his three point percentage is 40, both good for a point guard. Sort of like Ben Wallace in Detroit. His TS% was always under .500 which is awful for a big, but no one really cared. You didn't mention his D at all, which is excellent and half of the game. He's also one of the best rebounding PG's in the league.

I don't believe 15apg is a big deal. The fact that he could get 15apg and still cause his team a victory is the problem.

Rondo is by far the most overrated player in the league.
And yes. You are definitely right about Allen, Pierce and Garnett. Those 3 guys are excellent shooters and will get him alot of assists on any given nights.
I also think Jason Kidd would do well aswell in that system. They don't play fast because of the vets they have and Kidd will get bailed out by KG Shaq, JO and Perkins when his matchup beats him.
15 APG is nothing when you absolutely fail at making open shots or show up in the last 5 minutes.
Rondo's decision making is awful at times. I see him running a fast break with Davis and he has an open lane for a layup but he decides to pass to davis who gets fouled and misses 1 of 2.
Top 3? GTFO.

Rondo is one of the best PG defenders if not the best. However, defense isn't really a problem for Boston. Boston plays great defense with Rondo on the bench also.
I just have a hard time believing that he's the only one who could do what he's doing with a team like Boston.
Imagine what a player like Rose would do with shooters like Allen, Pierce, and KG. Rose would look like god too.

Some people overrate him but the majority of people have him as the 4th or 5th best point guard in the league, which is fair.

Re: How can you be a top 3 PG with a .480 TS%
I agree that a big part of it is due to Allen, Pierce and Garnett. A lot of teams have had to focus on those three on defense and it took a lot of pressure off of Rondo, resulting into him developing into a good point guard. One of the main points of having a point guard is so that he can distribute the ball, which is exactly what Rondo excels at.
Even though he can't shoot, the Celtics can sometimes live with it because they have The Big Three carrying the scoring load. Rondo is good at passing and playing defense so he's a good point guard for that team.

Please leave Rose out of this...stick to Paul, Westbrook, Williams etc...
Especially due to garbage posts like the one just below.

Re: How can you be a top 3 PG with a .480 TS%
The problem with slotting Rose into that team is that Rose's value is in his scoring, so for him to maintain that he's basically going to have to take possessions away from Allen/Pierce/Garnett. That's part of why Rondo has been so successful, he's not shooting so he's freeing up opportunities for superior offensive players. The comparison I'd use is Bosh in Miami. His value is in his offensive game, but for him to succeed he has to take possessions away from LeBron and Wade.
Someone mentioned Jason Kidd, I think that would work for them because he's not going to take a tonne of shots and most of his possessions would be assists.

Imagine if Steve Nash played for the Celtics, he'd be getting so many assists over there in Boston.

Jason Kidd is also one of the best PGs to ever play the game and is a HOFer. He'd work on almost any team.

I watch plenty of Celtics games. I watch them online and when they are on national TV. They are a fun team to watch(I am a Lakers fan). I've seen enough of Rondo to make my statement.
Here's my statement and I stand by it:
On some teams, Rondo's game would hurt the team more than he helps. If that's the case, he should be no where near a top 3 PG.
For example, he would hurt the Lakers more than he could help. His non-shooting ability would ruin the Laker's offense and hurt Kobe's game. His great assist ability would not matter because the Lakers don't have shooters like the Celtics in their starting lineup. He would also be terrible in the triangle.
However, Chris Paul, Deron, Nash, Westbrook, Steph Curry, Devin Harris, Nelson, Billups, and more PGs would all be amazing with the Lakers.
Again, Rondo is a system player. The Celtics hide his massive weaknesses. On other teams, he'd be exposed.

It would probably make Rose a much better passer, though.
Rose wouldn't have to worry about scoring since he has three other options on offense to pass too. He would be able to utilize his strength, speed and quickness more for playmaking and penetration.
If Rondo was on a team without any good offensive options his whole career, he probably wouldn't be as good at passing as he is now. He would feel like he has to step up on his shooting/scoring due to a lack of scorers on his team and he wouldn't have a chance to put emphasis on playmaking as much.

I agree but Rondo is not Kidd. Prime Kidd is better than Rondo in almost every area of the game. Kidd was also a decent shooter from 3 and at times, a very good 3pt shooter.

His rebounding and defense help his case, but I agree that his numbers are inflated by playing alongside multiple future Hall of Famers.
Still a great point guard, though, and better than the likes of Rose or Westbrook IMO. Just not quite on the same level as CP3, D-Will, and Nash.

The Lakers would definitely be better with Rondo. What makes Rondo so great is he gets his teammates the ball right where they want it. His vision is insane. Dismissing him because he cant shoot or because he plays with great players is just hate. If you seriously dont think Rondo would be an upgrade over the Lakers current PG, you are just as guilty as the posters saying hes the best PG in the league, just on the opposite spectrum. Hes a top 5 pg, if you have him at 1 youre wrong. If you have him at 10, youre wrong.
