We should target Okur

Post#1 » by azuresou1 » Wed Nov 17, 2010 6:50 pm

True C? Check.
Rebounds fairly well? Check.
Defends? Check.
Spaces the floor? Check.

Trading for him would allow us to address our biggest flaw, which is rebounding. Okur by himself isn't an amazing rebounder, but he's competent and boxes out well, and in running a big lineup with Smoove/Horford/Okur as the frontcourt our rebounding would not be an issue.

Unlike guys like Bargnani or Shard, he can also defend, and he also has a post game. He'd also let us play Horford at the 4, where he's happier.

Thoughts?

Injuries and contract are my concern.

Okur's contract is pretty reasonable, only goes one more year where he's owed $10.8MM. If we shipped out Marvin for him, we could still be under the tax.

As for injuries, they're a concern, but at the same time without that risk I don't think we could get him for just a Crawford or Marvin.

Whereas I'd love to get a true C who can hit nearly 40% of his 3's, this is 1 of those how do we do it situations. I don't think that we would trade any of our 1-3 guys for him and we'd need to replace whoever we'd consider trading out of our 4-9 guys and only Zaza could be replaced by Okur. This is without even considering any tax ramifications next year.

Still, Okur would surely be a nice get though...

I am sure the Jazz would not trade their only real good center (Fessenko is still a project) for another forward. They already have Millsap and Jefferson and also Kirilenko.

I was thinking something like Jamal for Okur, and then probably saying goodbye to Zaza and either Collins or Etan for an expiring.

The Jazz are rolling without Okur already, and they could use more outside scoring.

If that'd get him, then I'm game. We'd be in the LT next year, but hey, it ain't my $$$...

I have trouble imagining Jerry Sloan embracing Jamal Crawford. Also while I could see them willing to dump Okur to a team with cap space for immediate luxury tax relief saving next year's contract isn't a big need with Kirilenko expiring. Also don't underestimate the Jazz wanting to stay with a master plan of a 3 big rotation of Okur/Jefferson/Millsap. It's similar to what the OP is probably seeing for the Hawks. I'm not sure anything we could offer would be as valuable to the Jazz as what Okur could be when healthy.

That's right, they exactly have what we would like to get, three good or very good players for C and PF rotation.
No need to have three All-stars for that, just one or two nearly at All-star level, and one or two good players.

I also think they want to keep Kirilenko not to get big relief, but in order to re-sign him, which would be at a lower salary allowing them to keep the same roster but without Tax.

since when Okur is a good defensive player? I think some of you get carried away easily. D. Howard would kill him. Okur is Zaza with shooting abilities. Cant play in the paint, can't score with his back to the basket, can't rebound to save his life. That's not what we need. We need a true C.
GO HAWKS.

Okur has always been a good defensive player. He's not All-Defensive caliber, but he's hardly Zaza.

http://www.thedreamshake.com/2010/5/11/ ... ck-hayes-a

Quick summary if you're too lazy to read: Okur is statistically the second best post defender in the league behind Dwight. This is confirmed by the eye test.

If Zaza could score with the efficiency and range of Okur, turned it over 33% less, and played really solid defense, then he would be a starting C. Unfortunately, he can't. Okur is a huge upgrade.

There's another option, don't if he would be easier to get : Troy Murphy
It's a different thing, and maybe we could need to keep Zaza, but since he's expiring, I would build a trade based on Crawford for Murphy.

Murphy is making almost 2M more than Crawford, so we could add Collins to limit the increase, and stay under the Tax this season.

Would you build something on Crawford+Marvin for Murphy+Morrow+futur pick, getting some relief for next season allowing to use part of full MLE.

Troy Murphy is a PF and not a C, and he doesn't defend. He posts the most empty stats ever.

I mean, the Nets are starting Kris Humphries and Joe Smith over him.

Josh Smith has way more value than Biedrins.
