Charles Barkley: "Kobe Top 5 All-Time"

I like how even someone so bold as Charles is having difficulty speaking his mind. It's like saying it is hard to pronounce, as if he's speaking a newly learned language.

There are probably sooo many closet cases that in their heart believe Kobe is at least an all-time top 5, but still cannot get over how much society has made it taboo and sin to say such words.

Whether you agree with him or not, you have to recognize how silly it is that it's like no one is allowed to say that anyone ever can possibly be better than MJ, Kareem, Magic, Larry, etc.

As sad as this may sound.

Charles Barkley always changing his tune.

*see when he said LeBron is better than Kobe etc*

What Charles should've added also that Gasol is now the Laker's best player.

Yeah Gasol is the best player on the Lakers I mean he only let Darko abuse him that takes a lot of talent

Just because Charles is opinionated it doesn't mean he is right all the time. We all know he is always changing his tune and often plays devils advocate.

Regarding this topic, it's unfair to have this conversation until we know kobe's full body of work. The role he plays in helping his team along with the total number of rings, mvps and team records will impact how he will measure up vs all time greats.

Throw in different eras and how the game will evolve and people will argue regardless. The Wilt argument is the perfect example. Wilt may have been the most dominant player ever, but IMO it was a result of lack of size in his era. He seemed to be playing against kids in all the highlights there are of him. And the dude won only 1 ring I believe. I thought this weighed heavily in the equation?

About Kobe I will say this, if his career ended today I'd say was the 2nd best shooting guard ever and no lesser than any other Laker in history. This said, my favorite Laker of all time is one Ervin Johnson.

Question: 5 magics johnsons vs 5 Kobe bryants, who wins?

I think the magics since they would set each other up for layups.

That was BY FAR the worst game of the year for Gasol.

but he still managed:
16pts, 14 rebs, 6 assists, 2 blks

Kobe's worst game was: 12pts/1reb/2assts on 27% shooting. you do the math.

gasol always finds a way to help the team, even on his worst nights, cant really say the same for kobe on those 4 for 24 nights.

Yes, let's judge Kobe vs. Gasol on the stats of a single game...

Gasol finds a way to contribute on bad nights? Everyone knows that if things got real and we NEEDED to win, Kobe would step up his greatness on command faster and better than anyone in the league, even on an off night. Sometimes, stats are far less important than intangibles.

Plus, this isn't a Kobe vs. Gasol argument thread.

u cant compare the stats of a big man and a guard. so emeka okafor helps his team more than kobe cuz he has like a 70% shooting percentage? pau got mauled by darko. mr manna or whatever had the game of his life. sure gasol had great stats on an off night, but bball is just as important defensively if not more than offensively. if kobe were a big man, he would be getting those stats on off nights as well, simply cuz of his drive. and he wouldnt have let darko run all over him. u dont compare bigs and smalls stats.
plus its a team game. if kobes struggling and his teammates step up and do their part, at the end of the game, kobes still taking the last shot. kobe helps the team overall more than anyone, even on bad shooting nights.

with that said, both are great players. awesome players. kobe is the face of the franchise, and if i had to choose between kobe or pau, id choose kobe everytime.

back to the subject... barkley said kobes the 6th best cuz towards the end, he said kareems his 5th, then kobe. its his opinion, and hes freakin hilarious, so i respect it. and he was a great player in his own right.

I permanently stopped taking his fat ass seriously the day he stated Deron Williams was the better point guard for reasons concerning CP3's lack of height.

i agree with your premise, but when was the last time you saw kobe play any D? seriously. I specifically remember at least 2 bench players ON THE MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES (i dont even know their name) easily dribbling around kobe for a lay up. and that happens practically every game.

I have to argue with your one point where you say that kobe helps his team by continuing to shoot even on a bad night. he is actually hurting his team by continuing to shoot when it is obvious that he is off. a better TEAMmate would recognize that he is off and would start penetrating and dishing and setting his teammates up rather than continuing to jack up offbalanced jumpers while being double teamed.

the most frustrating part about kobes game is that he could easily average 10 dimes per game on this squad, especially considering how ball dominant he is, and that his starting pg is actually a SG, and that he has 2 of the top 5 big men in the nba on his team. however, he chooses not to be a better TEAMmate and instead just keeps on shooting.

its ironic that you bring up the whole basketball is a team sport thing. i think if you ask any non-american outside of kobe's generation they wouldn't even rank him in the top 10 all time. americans have such an individualistic attitude that they see individualistic selfishness as a quality to be admired.

if you were ranking nba players by how much they actually helped their teammates win the game it would go more like:
1. Magic
2. Oscar Robertson
3. MJ/Larry Bird/John Stockton
4. Everyone else

stupidity at its best
its sucks to be a kobe hater this days i guess, they dont know where to attack

about thread kobe isnt a top 5 player of all time, not yet he will be there when he finishes his career but not yet.
in most peoples list -european,american,mexican,chinese bla bla- he is top 8-10 even with all the hate towards him he is still making %75 of the lists,he s deserving to be in all of them but that would be the perfect world without hate.
