Nick Collison extended 4 years, $11 million (sort of)

Post#1 » by slick_watts » Tue Nov 23, 2010 6:06 pm

Thunder have announced they've signed Collison to an extension.

IMO, this is either really good or really bad depending on the $$$... (it's good)

My best guess on annual salaries is: 2011: $3.3M, 2012: $2.93M, 2013: $2.57M, 2014: $2.22M

Very good value for Collison. To get him that cheap we used the rest of our cap space this year to give him a ~$6.5M signing bonus.

EDIT: http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_ ... -extension

He's 30 and his rebound rate has declined each year + he's becoming injury prone. I'll reserve my judgment until we see the terms.

stop looking at the #'s so much. The dude is as tough as ever, and his fight is commendable. He still makes winning plays and that's all that matters.

I do feel bad for Jeff though. It seems like everyone is getting an extension but him

Jeff wants $$$ or he would have agreed to something this offseason. He'll get more in RFA, put Presti to the test.

It is prob the same type of deal Sefolosha signed last season. It is a good signing! But, I am sure Kristic is going to asking where his contract is next. I am not sure the thunder are sold on him being the Center for the next coupe of seasons:

CENTER/ Alrich
Ibaka/ Collison
Durant
Sefolosha/ Harden
Westbrook/ Maynor

There is 8 guys in Brooks usual 9-man rotation. If Green comes back for a reasonable price, then Great. Brooks will have to make it a 10-man rotation.

4 year extension for a 30 year old who doesnt see much minutes? Should of just let him go and let DJ White be the replacement until we draft a nice and bigger PF. Save some money

Man a lot of you guys really don't see the value in Nick do you. This contract is based on a lot more than simply numbers.

He was the Thunders best big last year. I seriously doubt his contract is going to be bloated. One of the reasons his rebounding numbers took a hit last season is that he is playing less minutes. And his teammates are shooting better percentages too.

Every team needs a reliable big off the bench who can come in play within himself and not try to do something he isn't capable of doing. Like trying to score 25pts or cross someone up off the dribble. Nick knows how he is and what he does best. He doesn't step outside of the box very frequently.

But I also believe that Nick is getting paid for being a very good practice player. Someone needs to play "D" in practice and that's Nick. Yeah were talkin bout practice.

Not only that but I have a feeling that management is also rewarding the guy for sticking it out and still playing hard when this team was bad, REAL BAD.

Nick has shown loyalty to this organization even when he had plenty of reasons not to. Management is showing some loyalty back.

Good for Nick and good for the Thunder. Nick is a good guy and a quality person, he is the type of player this teams wants around.

Now we just need the figures on this deal, really don't have any worries I just want to know. Anyways, I am more than happy to hang on to him. He comes to play every night and is a great defensive spark as we have seen since he came back.

Plus, he is a Jayhawk!

wiff, everyone knows what Nick does on the court. He's a solid defender against most bigs, he's an excellent team defender, great teammate, etc. etc.

But he's also 30, he won't ever play 2000 minutes in a year again, he's missing training camp the last two years, and his rebounding has fallen off. His minutes have nothing to do with it:

Career DRB%: 20.3%
2008: 19.7%
2009: 16.7%
2010: 15.2%

His offensive rebounding has remained consistent.

I have no problem with extending Nick so long as the price was reasonable.

Here are some details on the extension: http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_ ... -extension

Looks like Sam Presti used our remaining cap space this season to give Collison a signing bonus that allowed us to retain him in future years at a huge discount.

This was put together perfectly! He does right by Collison money wise and keeps his salary low heading into who knows what this summer and on.

Contracts like these is how the Thunder will manage to be able to keep their core together for a long time.

You give big money to the right people, sign everyone else to smart value contracts.
