OT: Josh Hamilton AL's Most Valuable Player

Josh Hamilton became the fifth Rangers player to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award on Tuesday, outpolling Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera and Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Hamilton received 22 of a possible 28 first-place votes to finish with 358 points. Cabrera received five first-place votes and had 262. Cano had 229. Toronto's Jose Bautista, who slugged 54 home runs, received the other first-place vote but finished fourth.

Hamilton is the first Rangers player to win the award since Alex Rodriguez in 2003. Outfielder Jeff Burroughs was the first Texas player to take the honor in 1974. Outfielder Juan Gonzalez won in 1996 and '98, and catcher Ivan Rodriguez won in 1999.

all while playing 11 less games than Bautista

that's probably why he thinks Cabrera was better overall

Well deserved. Hamilton was putting up numbers that my guy puts up in video games. He's so good at hitting that the fact that he doesn't get on base that much is rendered irrelevant. Usually the high OPS guys have great walk numbers, but he's doing it through pure hitting.

Personally I think they are very close, it just stupid how Cabrera was actually considered a candidate and Bautista really wasn't.

There were many more categories that Cabrera was better in.

I'm not saying they weren't close but Cabrera was definitely more deserving than the Baus.
Bautista should have got 3rd place I felt though.

No offense man but im pretty sure how many runs you drive in has a pretty direct relation to your teams success and thusly your credentials as an MVP. What stats would you suggest we go off of?

R/RBI are a function of the team you're on and your spot in the lineup, as much as they are a function of how good a hitter you are. BA only reflects a portion of a hitter's ability to get on base, and doesn't reflect his power. It is useless. Why would anybody use stats with such weak correlation to production when there are so many better stats out there?

That said, usually MVPs are given based on the old fashioned stats. Which along with the fact that Bautista was on a 4th place team, probably contributed to him dropping to 4th place in voting. I was surprised he didn't even get a single 2nd place vote, even though Miggy deserved to be runner-up.
