Channing Frye appreciation thread

Post#1 » by Herman4MVP » Thu Nov 25, 2010 5:38 am

Honestly - I am very happy with Channing's progress - he and Warrick have been pleasant surprises IMO.

He found his shot again, he is a very good FT shooter, he gives effort on the defensive end and he tries to grab those boards - what more could he do to repay his contract.

At the start of the season I hated his chucking but now he seems to have found some sort of groove and it looks pretty good.
Prediction for this season: Spurs beat Heat 4:2 in the finals (the revenge of Pop)
I don't like it, but it is highly possible this season with IND and OKC struggling

I have to agree. When his shot is not falling, he's doing other things to have some worth.

The way he's been playing makes me want to put Lopez in the 2nd unit when he returns. Let's go small ball and start Frye at center, and Hakim at pf. Hill or Hedo for small forward is fine with me.

I've always said Lopez should go with the second unit. Frye fits better in the first unit.

here's my lineup.. with this, we can stay a little bigger on the boards and compete..

Nash-Dragic
JRich-Dudley/JChill
Hill-Hedo/JChill
Warrick-Hedo-Barron
Frye-Lopez

I like Hedo in the second unit because he takes some of the ball-handling pressure from Dragic. I considered him starting instead of Hill, but Hill won't have the same production off the bench considering he won't get fed open shots as much with Dragic. Plus, Hill gels with the first unit a lot better than Hedo does. I like the idea of starting a 6'10 SF for defensive and rebounding purposes, but it'll be a lot more useful off the bench.

Frye is automatic the last ~5 games on offense and played really really good last night against the bulls on D too. When Lopez is back I wouldn't mind trying

Nash
Jrich
Hill
Frye
Lopez

That's a tall lineup.

Yeah, Frye has stepped up to the plate. He has changed his game a little and focused on the physical parts of being a big man. It looks like he has actually worked on his post game also. I am very happy with his progress. With the way he is playing, and how Warrick is doing, it just goes to show what a bad decision it was to go get Hedo. We would have been fine at Pf. right now with Frye and Warrick at the Pf. and the possibilities of finding another big body like Clark, and or the rook Lawal to help in the front court. Now we have a guy not giving us much and an unmovable contract cloging up the rotation.

As good as Frye has been coming around to capably doing what the Suns need at any given time, be it hit that 3, grab that "trucking" rebound now, block that shot, or defend your man; which he has done-I still like him coming off the bench. He can stay out of foul trouble, gets Dragic and Dudley more time on the floor which anchors the second unit into the force that it was last year. Of course we're missing the likes of an Amundson and still in the 'gelling process' of utilizing Hedo and Warrick.

We still need a power forward.. I know, they don't grow on trees. The thing is we are so close to being a championship contenders. We are one athletic power forward away from being right there with Lakers and. Others. I really want Josh Smith but it looks like its going to be hard to trade for him. Kevin Love is the other player I want and see here with Nash. I'm not sure who we can get and what are we willing to give up. I know that Nash,Childress,Dragic, frye and Dudley need to stay. I'm willing to give up on Warrick in order to get that missing pieces. But maybe if we can get Josh Smith we might have to give up Richardson, RLopez and a 1st round pick not protected.

Frye has been kicking some major tail. But he defiantly needs help and help soon.

GO SUNS!! GO get an athletic power forward!!

Need a monster center that can block and score and put Frye at PF. RoLo as a backup but not the primary #5.

Frye played excellent versus the Clippers. He seems like he's taking pride in rebounding and playing solid defense. I guess the one guy that could compliment Frye would be Darrell McArthur from the Grizzlies. A good slasher who can shoot from 15-18 ft. He also can play above the rim and would excel in the pick and roll with Nash. We still need a power forward/center.

I'm very pleased with Frye's play.

I've been quite high on Darrell Arthur. I think I would consider moving Dudley and a second for him and Haddadi

I'm very critical on Channing but I do like his stroke. He's inconsistent and when he misses he screws up our entire offense. So far he's been better though.

ever since he blocked gasol's shot at the end of that game against LA he has become our only shotblocker. plus he rebounds and does whatever rolo used to do on D (i.e. alter shots, block shots, inside presence) etc.

and he is starting to develope a post game. really happy with frye's improvement this year

While I think that Channing isnt a strong or physical player and the Suns definitely overpaid him. i have to give him credit for hitting the boards alot more this year and truly making an effort on defense. He still isnt a great defender but he is trying and he is improving. He's even stepping in to hit the midrange when people run him off the 3 point line more often and not shying from the post as much. I see people bashing him nite in and nite out on the azcentral forums and I just dont get it; I think he is truly trying to live up to his contract no matter how difficult that may be.

Channing Frye isn't really overpaid. Simply looking at his dollar amount isn't good enough; When Amir Johnson received the full MLE from Toronto, it solidified the fact that Channing would receive a significant pay day, and had all of the leverage he needed to do so. We're talking about a league in which Darko Milicic is owed 20 million over the next four years and freaking Amir Johnson is owed 30 million over the next five years. IMO, Channing Frye's deal is a fair one---Especially if he continues to play legitimate post defense and make shots from a myriad of areas. I mean really, how many PF/C do you know of that defend at a respectable clip, shoot 3's efficiently, and can expand their game in other areas when asked to do so?

Channing's been good this season. I'm glad we re-signed him.
