This is interesting. I think he'll sign a multi with someone else then. The reason he would say what he did is to put pressure on the team's to deliver a good contract, otherwise they will lose him to the jays tonight. If he just declined arbitration he loses that bargaining chip and the other teams could come in lower tomorrow. Smart move by Frasor and his agent.

And yeh, I'm new to this whole process but it seemed like he was using it more like a chip. I wonder who will surrender their first round pick for him? Hopefully it is a first round pick...

Damn....too bad. I guess the other teams weren't so serious. Frasor and his agent called their bluff and they didn't come through with a decent deal i guess.

Not a shock...there was always a good chance that he'd take arbitration, as there are quite a few relievers on the market. He'll likely close, and we'll try to peddle him mid-season or try the arb route again next year.

Heh, works for me...assuming Downs goes to a good team that signs one or more FAs, we're looking at:

- the 21st pick;
- one around 35-40 for Downs;
- three in the 40-55 range (too lazy to check the Elias scores) from Buck, Olivo and Gregg;
- one around ~75, probably another in the 80s from Downs (could be as late as 115 if the team signing him gets two higher-ranked type-As).

Not quite the eight picks that we had in the top 93 last year, but seven in the same range still gives up a great shot at adding talent. Given that we're already had 14 B- prospects or better in Sickels' rankings (which remarkably doesn't include Hech, Marisnick, Alvarez, Jenkins or Carreno), we're going to be scary-deep, and it hasn't really cost us much.

Yep...their brief window closed when Crawford left, but they are going to be pretty scary in three years. And far more scary if they manage their youngsters well; with the trend towards buying out 2-3 years of a guy's free agency before they ever hit arbitration, it's going to be a little easier for them (and us, for that matter) to lock in those guys and have a shot at some sustained success.

Tampa Bay is going to be a very scary team even come this year. Even though they're gonna lose Crawford, Pena and Soriano, they have up and coming players that could arrive to their team as soon as this season like Desmond Jennings who experts feel he's a Carl Crawford clone with more Derek Jeter patience at the plate, Jeremy Hellickson who's been a solid minor league pitcher who hasn't gotten the praise that he deserves, and SS Tim Beckham who was the first overall pick in 2008 NBA Draft. I think that they'll look to trade James Shields for probably more power in their lineup and may look to putting Hellickson in the rotation. There are rumours that they're also looking to trading Jason Bartlett.

But will they go overslot for elite talent? Some of their well drafted players were picked in top spots, while this time they have lower slots, which means they have to go overslot to land the good picks. I'm not sure if they are willing.
