We knew life could survive in Lake Mono with arsenic and phosphorus, but we did not know it could survive with 0 phosphorus. This was an experiment done in the lab with bacterium found in Lake Mono, which is heavy in arsenic but also contains an ingredient for life with phosphorus. In the lab they reduced the amount of phosphorous to 0 and replaced this with arsenic.
Basically life as we knew it needed phosphorus, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and/or sulfur. This is the first time proven that life was able to survive and thrive without any of those ingredients.
Phosphorous is very similar to arsenic much like carbon is similar to silicon. It opens the door for many other possibilities such as silicon life forms. Ok, so now where are the fake boob pics?
Carbon and Silicon are not that similar. Carbon forms all kinds of things that Silicon does not. Carbon is the only element that readily bonds in 4 directions, that's why it's so versitile. Nothing else comes close.
But you're correct on Phosphorous and Arsenic having similar properties.
True. Silicon does not form double/triple bonds as readily as Carbon, but they are in the same group/family so share some properties. Both have 4 electrons in the outer shell
Its probably more science fiction, but a lot of people have theorized about Silocon based life. So i def didnt come up with it. But if there can be arsenic based life maybe also silicon

Wake up? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_element
This is a fail even if you take Wiki as authentic. Basically the link said elements produce waste or byproducts when exposed with other elements or through a process of decaying, after affect is a synthetic element. Science has always tried to find beginning points to everything that exist but will never figure through science what's the true source of all energies(the core ones to life) and what programs the designs of such processes. Like how is Phosphorus developed and where does it come from? Can Scientist change 2 important elements such as Hydrogen and Oxygen and have it not produce Water when mixed together? No they can't. Since I may have been too harsh how about stopping the speed of light from traveling 186,000mph, or change the laws of gravity without jeopardizing life?
Also which scientist if any there believe there is no beginning?

Ice? Steam? Hydrogen Peroxide?

We can slow the speed of light in water or other mediums. We can also bend light using gravity so it takes longer to travel from point A to point B. Light can not escape blackholes also.

Re: O.T. .::THE SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY THREAD::.
Cool thread. I never knew about this. I'm kind of a science nerd myself.
**SPOILER ALERT*** (kind of)
BTW I'm midway through the 9th season of Stargate SG-1 on netflix, and they still have introduced the 4th alien species that was part of that Alien Committee (of advanced alien species). The Furlings or something like that. What's up with that?
** End of SPOILER ALERT**
Very cool news about the first life form found on Earth with different building blocks than any other known Earth life forms. I'm just hoping there isn't some sort of negative side effect to this discovery. If this bacteria is so alien and foreign to us, it's unlikely that human (or any other animals) have building up any genetic immunity to this specific bacteria, because their ancestors may have never encountered this type of bacteria before. But I guess since this is a bacteria and not a virus, human's wouldn't have incorporated any of it's DNA into their own over the course of human evolution.

The Show's been in Syndication for a few Years now...I don't think there's a need for Spoiler Tags anymore.
Anyway, the Furlings have long been a running joke for those who enjoy SG. Some think they were slipped in as the Aliens that attacked the Prometheus when Sam was knocked unconscious and let alone aboard the Prometheus.
Others think they were referenced in that Gateway episode when Jack and Maybourne were stuck on that Planet's Moon together.
Many were hoping they'd be introduced in SGA or one of the SG1 Movies. I doubt they ever get referenced in SGU.

NASA is looking for volunteers to fly to Mars - the snag is that you won't come back.
It is actively investigating the possibility of humans colonising worlds such as the Red Planet.
The settlers would be sent supplies from Earth but would go on the understanding that it would be too costly to bring them home.

I'm sure several scientists came out and doubted Penicillin when it came out.
I'm sure several scientists came out and doubted Evolution when Darwin debuted it.
I'm sure several scientists came out and doubted a Round Planet and Non-Terran Central Planetary System when it debut.
Point being, that there will always be something to debate in Science.

Yeah, I'm not the brightest star in the sky but I like the discovery. NASA simply don't have the funds and support like they once used to so finding something like this here on earth should help persuade some.

The difference here we're talking about some of the more basic fundamental procedures in Science not being exercised when trying to isolate matter/atoms/molecules/protons/electrons/DNA etc etcLast week, NASA triumphantly announced that they had discovered a new form of bacteria that could not only survive in arsenic, but seemed to have traded arsenic for phosphate in its DNA strands. It was a big announcement, because it radically expanded our understanding of what chemicals can be used to create life.
Too bad it seems to be flim flam. Almost universally, the science of NASA’s study is under attack by microbiologists who are deeply skeptical of the findings.
The charge is being led by biologist Rosie Redfield of the University of British Columbia, who notes that: “It seems much more likely that the arsenic they are seeing is contaminating arsenic that’s going along for the ride.”
Her proof? NASA’s study did not decontaminate the bacteria’s DNA that they were studying. Redfield notes that decontaminating the DNA in question would have required “a little kit that costs $2 and takes 10 minutes, and then you have pure DNA that you can analyze. … That’s just asking for contamination problems… It’s as if they wanted to find arsenic, so they didn’t take a lot of trouble to make sure they didn’t find it by mistake.”
The complaints are not limited to Redfield: scientists are coming out of the woodwork to attack almost every procedural element of the experiment NASA has reported.
How could NASA have been suckered in by such shoddy science? “I suspect that NASA may be so desperate for a positive story that they didn’t look for any serious advice from DNA or even microbiology people,” says John Roth of UC-Davis.
With the space shuttle program ending for at least the next five years and the private space industry getting all the press, I suspect he might just be right.
Yeah, I'm not the brightest star in the sky but I like the discovery. NASA simply don't have the funds and support like they once used to so finding something like this here on earth should help persuade some.

OT: The Statue of Liberty is the Devil!
[Bobby Bouche Mamma's voice]
Is anybody watching the History channel right now? This show called Brad Meltzers Decoded is on and its basically saying that the statue of liberty was designed by "free masons" who were apart of illuminati and the statue of liberty is basically a devil woman. Its still on for 15 minutes
Show before this "Anchient Aliens" that **** was crazy too. Both of these shows are pretty wild

My mind is blown away now.

What if illuminati had it built (the statue of liberty) in front of NY because they may have thought since America had a statue of lucifer in front of it, that God would destroy America. Bible says you arn't allowed to build statues or worship anything but him. Wouldnt a statue of Satan be exactly that? Not that i believe in the bible but you never know i guess.
I mean, it was a "gift" from the French.
