Can Deron realistically be MVP this year?
He's had a fantastic start statistically besides the first few games. The Jazz are on a roll right now and he is the undisputed leader of this team.
If he can keep up relatively what he is doing now for the majority of the season, can he do it?
Will the general public allow this to happen?

whether he deserves it or not, fantasy numbers are ruling out for the mvp voting lately. he won't win if this be the case again this year.

Only if the Jazz have the best record at the end of the reg season. And every other big star has a bad year.

Basically, at the end of the season, it comes down to: are there manufactured ESPN stars whose teams have better records than the Jazz? If not, he's got a chance.

Re: Can Deron realistically be MVP this year?
It really depends on how he does in head to head matchups against other MVP candidates, like against Dirk tonight, and how he does on nationally televised games, in addition to keeping his statistics outstanding. When you play for the Jazz, you have to take advantage of the little exposure you get, and DWill should have some great chances of doing that. At the very least, he will be a strong candidate if he continues his dominance.
Along these lines, can anybody toss up the Hollinger article on the front page of the NBA on ESPN right now? It looks like it's about DWill.
Also, has anybody else noticed that his power rankings seem to be at the mercy of the superstar loaded teams more-so than years past? I mean the Heat just passed the Jazz after winning 3 in a row against some terrible teams, and it took the Lakers forever to fall during their losing streak. Maybe they are just crazy this far into the season, I dunno, seems jacked though.

Word is, South Beach is ecstatic that they
won't be seeing Millsaps talents again this season...

I think that the Jazz will need to win 60+ games for him to be seriously considered.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

Re: Can Deron realistically be MVP this year?
For Deron to realistically be MVP I think he'd have to average 25+ points, 10+ assists, and the Jazz win 60+ games for the season. None of which are going to happen, so no I don't think he has a chance.

I think the key to Williams is to keep his TO's down and he will get some serious looks. He does have to stay at the consistency he is currently playing.

Re: Can Deron realistically be MVP this year?
So far it's a race between the three D's of Deron, Dirk and Dwight. Going to be hard to surpass Dwight since he is such a force on defense along with putting up numbers on offense. Dirk has been awesome so far and he has won it before so you know he can do it....
Deron needs to get the Jazz to 60+ wins and at least 2nd in the west to have any hope of getting MVP with how the voting goes for the award (popularity contest).
If the Jazz win tonight...they will have beaten both the Magic (on the road) and the Mavs...so Deron should get a leg up on both of them (for now at least).

Re: Can Deron realistically be MVP this year?
To me it's nearly impossible. First of all, they need to have one of the best records, probably at the very least the best record in the West. Top 3 record in the NBA is virtually a MUST.
2010 - James, Cavs (#1)
2009 - James, Cavs (#1)
2008 - Bryant, Lakers (#3, #1 in conference)
2007 - Nowitzki, Mavs (#1)
2006 - Nash, Suns (#3, #2 in conference), Stoudemire was injured most of the year
2005 - Nash, Suns (#1)
2004 - Garnett, Wolves (#2, #1 in conference), numbers were UNREAL
2003 - Duncan, Spurs (#1)
2002 - Duncan, Spurs (#2, #2 in conference), once again UNREAL numbers
2001 - Iverson, Sixers (#3, #1 in conference), Mutombo was 2nd best player, team full of role players
Top 3 team in NBA: 100%
Best in conference: 80%
Best in NBA 50%
Following the trends, teams that qualify now are Spurs, Dallas, Orlando, and Boston. Dirk and Dwight are probably the current leaders, with an edge for Dwight, IMO.

Re: Can Deron realistically be MVP this year?
I don't think there's any question that Deron has a very legitimate chance of making the All-NBA first team and ending up in the top 4-6 in the MVP voting. As for actually winning the MVP? Well, it's possible, but pretty damn unlikely. Like people have been saying, we'd have to win 60+ games. Even then, if it was a close call between him and somebody who's been in the MVP conversation before (guys like Dwight, Dirk and Kobe, for example), I'm guessing the voters would give the tie-breaker to the more established MVP candidate (though I guess Nash's first MVP went completely against that logic). In any case, it's a long shot.

Re: Can Deron realistically be MVP this year?
If Malone could get two of them, I think DWill could get one.....but Jazz needs to have a top-3 record in the league as someone pointed out...

Right now, Deron is in the running along with Dirk and Dwight. As long as each of their teams can get 55+ wins or a top 3 seed, they'll get it.

For ALL-NBA I guess if it were to end today it would look like:
Howard
Dirk
James
Kobe
Williams
As of now Williams looks like a shoe in, James and Kobe make it though they aren't exactly having strong MVP campaigns.
Chris Paul's numbers were off the chart and his team played great and he didn't win, so you never know. Williams is close though, but the Jazz need to pass Dallas, and it'll make it a lot easier for Williams. Hell I'll probably give him the edge as Boston doesn't really have an MVP candidate, nor would I say Manu is a legit candidate.
