About time. Glad this is over and the Yanks finally realized it was STUPID to start at an offer that would have paid Derek less than AJ **** Burnett. I mean, seriously Cashman.

Market value
Yea, we can file market value with the Mitchell report as suspect, horribly biased skewed reports.
You can shave almost every Yankee contract of 7 million after every player save Cano had a down year.

Glad you see it my way.
And there won't be vultures around Jeter if he struggles (and he won't). The vultures will be around AJ and Cliff Lee should they struggle especially when the Yanks sign Lee to the 160M/6 yr deal.

So sure Jeter won't struggle? If its anything like the last 5 months + playoffs that we saw last year, I'd call that a significant struggled.

Re: OT: Official Derek Jeter Thread
i cant believe he got this much money
i wouldve offered him 7 per take it or leave it...now paying him 17 each year means thats 10 mill less we get to spend in the OS for the next 3 seasons
terrible deal for a old, 270, GIDP lover, less range, glorified singles hitter
we will be regretting this contract

I never cared for the money, just the years. I'm very happy with 3 years, we all knew he was going to get his money.

Exactly. After 4 pages of people WHINING over Jeter, NO ONE should care about the money. This is an uncapped league and the Yankees are NOT the Kansas City Royals.
The length is FAIR. By the time Jeter's contract is up, Hanley Ramirez could possibly be in the discussion (depending on Jeter's opinion and when Hanley's contract ends) as the heir.
Of course the Yanks will be in a bidding war with any number of teams.
Till then you'll see Posada and Jeter rotate as other bench players provide late innings defense.
But it's STILL hilarious reading the Jeter hate. Seriously, WTF man.

This is why everyone else but yankee fans hate the yankees.
The yankees will not be a dynasty like they were in the late 90's early 2000's until they start developing their own prospects again like they did with Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Pettite etc...
You end up massively overpaying washed up old vets like Burnett, Jeter, Lee...
I honestly see Lee becoming average at best if he signs with the yanks and they'll be in over $100 million left in his contract for a 10 win pitcher with 4.5-5 era in a few years.
Keep having you delusions that signing every a list free agent out there will get you more titles but look back at who you've been losing to in the past few years, young teams who drafted and developed their own guys for the most part.

The Yankees have been developing their own prospects. Hughes was an all-star, Joba was a 7th/8th inning man, Robertson shared roles with Joba, Gardner had a great year in LF, Cervelli is a solid backup catcher, Montero is coming this season.
However, that doesn't mean you can't sign free agents too. If a team can afford a $250 million payroll, then why not shell the money out? There is no reason to settle on a $180 million payroll and focus on developing prospects, it is possible to do both.
The Yankees can't "pass" on Cliff Lee and tell the fans "Don't worry, we are working on developing young pitching prospects instead."

Nobody was hating on Jeter, we were just saying that he isn't worth 5 years or $20-25 million that he was reportedly asking for. And we were proven right as he pretty much accepted the Yankees' offer. We all knew he wasn't going to go anywhere else, and we also knew the Yankees were offering him a generous deal, so why bid against themselves and waste money for no reason.

Re: OT: Official Derek Jeter Thread
Plus 1. Nobody was saying that we didn't want Derek Jeter coming back next year.
Here are my problems with Jeter. He is going to be 37 next year, he hit .270 last year with an ops of 90. He was beyond horrible last year offensively. His range is that of a turtle. The Yankees first offer to Jeter was probably double than any other contract he would have received on the open market. Why should the Yankees have to pay a ton to keep him here? Doesn't he owe the team that just paid him 189 million over 10 years something as well? Jeter just didn't deserve a demotion, he deserved a huge paycut.
I do not want to hear that Jeter sells tickets and ratings. Yankees winning games sells tickets and ratings. Are fans really going to be happy with Jeter in 2012 when he is hitting .250 and making a ton of money? Jeter already started to hear the boo birds this past year.
I also do not want to hear that Jeter is going to have a bounce back 2011. The stats do not lie, SS's after the age of 36 do not bounce back. It's 99.999999 accurate.
I also do not want to hear about the ARod contract. Huge difference. That was in 2007, Arod was 32, before the Great Recession, Arod came off of his 3rd MVP in 4 years, 5 seasons, before the steroid scandal and Arod had the 3rd best season in Yankees history. 55 HR's and 150 RBI's.
Here are my other issues with Jeter. Due to his "name", he has to hit in the top of the lineup. How many teams would have bat a guy with an OPS of 90 in the top two of the lineup? This is the same Jeter who had an OPS of .630 against right handed pitching. Any other team would have either benched him against righties or bat him 9th in the lineup.
How about the fact that nobody has a clue of when Jeter is going to be willing to let go of SS. This is going to be Cal Ripken Part Deux. I do not want to hear about his fielding percentage. It's easy to make plays on balls hit right at you. It's the grounders up the middle that he had no chance of getting to. how about the fact that he threw a ton of balls in the dirt that should have been errors with any other 1b not named Teixeira.
Yankees should have held firm on a 3 year 36 million dollar deal. 1 million per month per year. No other team in baseball would have offered him more than 20 million. Not after last year, not with his age.

Re: OT: Official Derek Jeter Thread
I guess the question now becomes, where do we bat him in the order? If he can't get his average up over .300, I think it will really be time to move him down to 7-9. I wonder if he will be "baffled" when he is asked to move down the way he was over being offered $15 million/year.

Not going to happen. Girardi doesn't have the grapefruits to move Princess Jeter down in the order. If he did, MR 90 OPS Plus would have been hitting 8th or 9th last year.

It didn't happen last year because he was coming off one of his best years ever, so you had to give him the benefit of the doubt. Now he is coming off his worst year ever, so you can justify moving him down.

The guy had a low 600 ops against right handed pitching all year. Yankees could have justified moving him down at the end of the season and in the playoffs. Girardi didn't have the grapefruits and it would have been easily justified.
Jeter isn't a team player. Last year proved it.
