OFFICIAL: Offseason Rebuilding Plan Thread

Post#1 » by jalenrose#5 » Tue Apr 17, 2007 12:33 am

I'd just thought with the playoffs in full swing and with the fact the Leafs aren't in them that I'd make an offseason rebuilding plan thread for everyone to post their plan where it can either be critiqued or complimented on. It should also save on alot of repetitive threads.

With that said, here's my offseason plan....

Sites Used...

I give you a lot of credit for putting in so much effort but I do not like the odds of some of those signings actually occuring. I do not see Drury signing with us, especially at those numbers, and I do not see Kariya signing with us either. I was thinking about this a couple days ago and has anybody else noticed that the elite free agents never sign with the Leafs? When we offered Federov, Holik, Hatcher, etc the same amount of money as everyone else they still would not sign with us. This is very troubling in my opinion because you can not really out pay the other teams anymore because of the cap and if you do it can really handicap you and restrict you from signing other players.

I'm just throwing out some names really....those are the guys I'd go after...and as you can see, I left enough room cap wise to offer them an extra million if needed....

but yeah...your right with the major FA's though. Alot of the players probably just can't take the pressure of playing in Toronto...look at MTL too....when was the last time they signed a marque FA....Samsonov??? lol

Kubina isn't exactly a negative asset just yet. He has still brought interest from other teams, one of them being Edmonton from before they dealt Ryan Smyth and started to tumble down the standings.

Personally, I think he's the guy we've got to trade this offseason. I don't mind him as a player, and have defended the signing in the past, but there's too many "depth" defenseman available via free agency. The team cannot afford his salary, especially considering the fact that he was outplayed by Carlo Coliacovo (IMO) and considered a 3rd/4th defenseman on the team.

Washington will not want to put $5 mill of salary for that type of player. Even if they did, there's no way they're giving up a top 5 pick int he draft to get him

This is a pretty weak draft this year by all accounts. There are alot of really good players, not all stars, but good players that they can get in the 10-20 range. The draft this year is W I D E open IMO....you never know who will be picked....here's a sample.

http://www.mynhldraft.com/2007

Washington is in desperate need of a reliable defender on the back end. They have the cap space to absorb his dirty contract, and also he was Tampa's best defenseman when they won the Stanley Cup two years ago. He's still got lots of value. I think he'll improve with more ice time. He can easily be a 40-60 pt defenceman on the PP playing with AO and Semin etc.

That's just my opinion. I think the Leafs should rid themselves of the 5 million contract because they might be the only team with 3 D-men over 4 million in salary and they still end up giving up more goals than they score as a team.

EDIT: They also ahv ethe 30th overall pick....if they reall wanted a top 10 pick, they cna easily trade the 13th and 30th for it.

Good thread but for one thing Emery will NOT sign with Toronto of all places.

I'll bring up some names soon. Although I'm hesistant, if this is a rebuilding plan, the only marquee FAs this team goes for are young ones ala Briere. Then you have to trade some vets, some of which you won't get that much for.

I'll post some ideas in the next days.

Oh yeah, and first step towards rebuilding: Fire Ferguson. Get a GM with a plan.
