Nothing, because the Sox can still offer him arbitration until midnight.

I don't think anyone, myself and Yogi included don't want Manny on this team... but it's not at all costs. I maintain there's no way, none, that you'll see him here for 10 million a season.

His agent has said he wants a contract similar to vladdy in Texas last year. A 1 year contract with incentives so he can prove to everyone that he can still hit, and try and get another multi year deal. Vlad's contract last year was 5.5 plus incentives. If Manny is coming here, the contract will be similar to that. If the numbers are reasonable, there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to not bring Manny aboard. A good hitter with something to prove trying to cash in 1 last time is a great addition to any lineup.

I can't believe anyone would be against bringing Manny Ramirez in, especially if it is on a one year deal. Amazing how Manny has a huge ego and is such a cancer yet the teams he played for (3 of them) still made the playoffs in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009 (with 2 WS titles mixed in there). The "Manny being Manny" stuff tends to be blown out of proportion.

He is coming off his worst season and he still had a .409 OBP and 139 OPS+. Even at age 39 he is a great hitter. Whether he has one more elite season in him is the question, but it would definitely be worth it for Toronto to be the ones to give him that chance. He wants to play there and the Jays could use a bat like his. If 2010 was the beginning of the end for his days as a top player, then what do the Jays lose? Very little. Just because Ricciardi signed Thomas for two years with a vesting option doesn't mean AA will do the same thing for Ramirez. Ricciardi practically gave every player a full NTC or opt-out or vesting option, etc. That was his way of attracting FA's, I guess. I don't think Manny will qualify here. Even if it is 1 year + an option that would be fine. The Jays have little in the way of premier hitting prospects in the minors. Manny won't be blocking anyone.

Hopefully, if we do sign him, he'd be able to be a good influence to the other hitters. He'd be a DH, correct? I want him to be a better version of the Frank Thomas incident.

if we do get manny...does that mean lind is a goner?

we would have enough bats in the lineup...that we wouldn't need his offense...id sign overbay for defense...and trade lind for something good...

That would be an awful idea. Relying on two guys who are well past their prime to provide the offence that 1B and DH should provide would be a disaster waiting to happen. Manny wouldn't take the place of any of our young guys, he's such a huge risk that if he's signed there needs to be a solid plan B in case things don't work out.
Not to mention the fact that Lind's trade value isn't where it was a season ago, and I'm pretty sure everyone in the Blue Jays organization is banking on him to have a comeback year next year.

Manny wasn't offered arbritation. Same with Overbay. Sign Manny and make him DH and Lind at 1B.

Jays GM won't be scared off by Manny's reputation

Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos wasn’t about to discuss Manny Ramirez as a potential Jay but he did say that he’s not necessarily afraid of players whose reputations precede them.

“It depends how significant the baggage,” said Anthopoulos when asked if he had a philosophy about taking on a player with baggage.

“Would it affect other players?

“A lot of times you hear things about players, that there are issues, but the more work you do, the more background you uncover, you find out it’s not what everyone assumes.

“You have to weigh each case by itself. If it’s the right player, the right fit, the right talent at the right price, you’ve got to be open to it.”

That doesn’t mean all those “ifs” apply to Ramirez, an aging slugger without a job.

But it doesn’t conclusively rule him out, either.

He's never gonna give a straight yes or no answer. It's a typical response from him, I wouldn't read too much into it.

An update of sorts. I think he has a girlfriend or business interests here

Even customs officers are wondering: Why is Manny Ramirez spending so much time in Toronto?

agreed.. while it's no fun as fans to not hear the juicy stuff, it's great that he's holding all his cards close to his chest. i wouldn't have thought this of him , given his young age!

I wonder if the Red Sox adding Gonzalez will entice AA to go after Manny a little more than before.
