The 2 p.m. deadline was considered "soft" -- meaning a deal could come after that time -- but according to Heyman, the parties just couldn't reach a deal. Gonzalez apparently wanted an eight-year extension while the Sox only wanted to go six years.

AA PLEASE!!! this is the opportunity of the century. I am sure Gonzalez will not end up like Wells. Give him the 8 years and bring in the franchise player

A reported 7 year/ 150+ mil thats alot of coin, these contracts this winter are kind of crazy, I wonder what Crawford and Lee will get.

I like this move for the Red Sox. Top 5 hitter at 7/150mil, that's cheap compared to the Werth and Jeter contracts handed out so far. Adrian mentioned he was a life-long Red Sox fan in the PC.
