I would feel more confident if I heard we dealt for a guy like Greinke before hearing new of this. Right now I'm just concerned and don't know what were doing. I mean couldn't we have dealt Marcum in a package deal for somebody who would put us over now. I feel that we have enough prospects as it is.

Still working on what the Brewers are sending to Toronto. I heard pitchers but I know they coveted 2B prospect Brett Lawrie, a Canadian.

It better not be Marcum and Lawrie straight up. Marcum is a legit #2 calibre starter, and he's pitched like that in the AL East. He is worth more than a 20-year old prospect (and I like Lawrie). Although there might be more pieces involved so too early to speculate.

Assuming this isn't a bridge to get Greinke, then the rotation took a pretty big hit here.

I was hoping we;d have Marcum by the time we're ready to really compete. He's such a gamer. He's a guy I'd want starting for me in a playoff game as a second or third starter. I'll miss him.

Yep, now he's saying they might have had to give up Lawrie. Now I'm sad. :(

If we're getting Lawrie and some other players to set up a Grienke trade, then I'm ok with it.

If there's no followup trade for a SP it becomes a bit of a head scratcher.

Marcum was a huge part of our team success last year. I don't think he's a guy you just dump off.

i think its a stretch to say Marcum's a legit #2 starter.
Legit #3/very solid #3 starter.
minus the Yanks, look at the starting pitcher rotation for the AL and NL finals.

Marcum was nice, but he's a good 12-15 win pitcher with nights where his stuff looks very good and nights where he looks alright/ok. he also had TJ surgery blah blah blah .

in the end, he was a good pitcher (not great) who was a low contract. so...there are 3 reasons why he was traded:

1. AA thought his funky delivery was an injury waiting to happen. sell high (and there were Marcum trade whispers for most of this season)
2. Move out an asset to get an asset back and make room for another asset (Greinke?)
3. they coveted this prospect badly and see him as being in this year or next year's starting line-up and being a star. you get rid of Marcum, pull up Rzep or Mills or whomever as your 5th starter, have Romero/Cecil/Morrow as your 1A/1B/1C starters and Drabek as your 4th starter and sail that boat.

I seriously can't believe AA would do something this stupid...

Marcum Pitches well in big games mainly against NY and Boston pitchers like that
don't grow on trees. He had a Roy Halladay work ethic and mentallity and was a leader
to the other pitchers and well liked in the clubhouse. You don't give away pitchers
like that especially in a deal like this.

I hear that Brett Lawrie is in the Marcum deal. Not confirmed. He is #Canadian. And talented. #Brewers #Toronto #BlueJays #MLB

So Marcum had outings where he was good, and others where he was all right. How many bad outings did he have??

Slow down. We don't know who exactly we got in this trade. This looks like one of the Brewers top prospects and possibly more, I'm fine with this trade. 10 year plan baby.

Wow. I guess this means a Grienke deal could be closer than we expected...

No matter who we get back in return, I think it's fair to say a lot of us are sad to see Marcum go.

some posters are talking like Marcum's a legit #1 starter.
he isn't.
he's at his ceiling and won't improve (unlike the other Jays' starters). he may be an injury waiting to happen.
so get a legit prospect or 3 back and let's see how the rest of the offseason progresses.

by the way, does it piss anyone else off that people factor his Cnd citizenship into a plus for the trade? does anyone think that AA cares that he's a Canadian? you don't make trades based on nationality. no GM does that.

Interesting. I've been in favour of a Marcum trade because his mechanics scare me, and Lawrie is pretty intriguing.

Not sure about the deal straight-up, though...Morosi's statement that Lawrie is in the deal (rather than that he is the deal) hopefully means something.

Let's trade GMs.

Let's wait to see the details but Marcum is a damn good pitcher who might be even better in the NL and Lawrie could easily bust. Melvin should probably go ahead and extend him right away. Romero's 5/30 sounds about right.
