Re: Shaun Marcum Traded to the Brewers
If it's to get Greinke, it reminds me of the Phillies trading Lee to make room for Halladay financially. It really diminishes the potential upgrade.
If it's just to get prospects, it's indicative of a salary dump and the cheapness of Rogers Communications.
So yeah, not a big fan of this right now.

he isn't.
he's at his ceiling and won't improve (unlike the other Jays' starters). he may be an injury waiting to happen.
so get a legit prospect or 3 back and let's see how the rest of the offseason progresses.
by the way, does it piss anyone else off that people factor his Cnd citizenship into a plus for the trade? does anyone think that AA cares that he's a Canadian? you don't make trades based on nationality. no GM does that.
Agree on both counts, especially #1, which is why I'm glad AA doesn't approach trades that way. And I don't think this would be for Lawrie straight-up.

btw, since when do the brewers have a pitching prospect that's worth anything? this has to involve lawrie.

Isn't Marcum a FA after this season anyway? And he'd probably command a lot more than we'd want to offer, considering we want to have Romero, Morrow, and Cecil as the real long term fixtures in the rotation.

Not sure about the deal straight-up, though...Morosi's statement that Lawrie is in the deal (rather than that he is the deal) hopefully means something.
I think it's pretty much guaranteed that Melvin is going to give up way more than he should because his job is on the line to win in 2011.

We have several that are worth something. It's a great myth that because they don't have good pitching in the majors and are always looking for pitching that they have none in the minors that are worth anything.

not necessarily, the Blue Jays do have legit options for the rotation, Rzep, fatty, Zach Stewart. I don't think this trade says anything about a possible Grienke move.

I believe that Marcum has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining.
And with regards to what I said about his mechanics twirly, Marcum scap-loads like a motherf*cker. He already had TJ surgery, and some (read: mostly myself) worry that he's going to torch his labrum at some point.

**** your asterisk.

he was under control for 2 more years and he could have come pretty cheap, like less than 5 million for both years cheap

In two years. It seems the Jays didn't want to pay him.

Haha. Hey, we should all be hoping he comes back healthy this year and makes himself valuable in some way (to our team or another through a trade). I know I am.

So what you're saying is we shouldn't be shocked if his arm flies off and hits a bird in spring training?

Re: Shaun Marcum Traded to the Brewers
In the National league he is DEFINITELY a first line starter. He averaged under four in the toughest division in baseball, whereas now he is pitching in a league where he'll probably only have to pitch six innings anyway with all the double switching.
He could win twenty games over there. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Yes, he's had surgery, but he proved he could stay healthy last year and it's not like he relies on "stuff" to be successful. His best pitch is his changeup. He's basically a Maddux-lite edition(I mean in terms of form, not greatness).

that would make sense if Marcum was gonna hit Free agency next year, he's still under control for two years at dirt cheap money, he was never gonna make in Arby because of previous salaries, no cheap owner would give up that kind of value

Either way I don't mind this move. I know AA was in rebuild mode, so if we get prospects like Lawrie or Ordorizzi I'd still be extremely happy.

Never know...he could pitch for five more years without issues, but there's a risk there. He bounced back incredibly strong from TJ, though.
