They might of overpaid (by a lot), but I give them credit for not being cheap and actually trying to improve their team. You can't say that about a decent amount of teams in the league. They were going to be spending 15 million/year (over 4-5 year contract) on Dunn anyway.

With that said, I'm not sure why they gave him 125 million, they probably could of had him for 15 million a year since they gave a 7th year.

Adam Dunn at 4yr/$60m or 5yr/$75m >>>> Werth 7yr/$126m, especially considering they're the same age.

it's insane how the MLB cries about revenue sharing and all this crap, yet you have someone as mediocre as Werth get paid $18M a season? WTH?

Werth is not mediocre. Is he worth 125 million? Absolutely not, but he is far from mediocre.

Does Werth not want to win or something? i mean its a huge amount of money but if i were him i would have taken less to play for a contending team, the nats wont even have Stras next year from him recovering from Tommy John and they just lost Dunn to the White Sox. So unless the only reason for him saying yes to the nats was bc he wants all the fame is crazy that he would even consider the nats. I think the nats will be a decent team in a few up coming years but nothing that will happen over night. Comon Jayson

Who in the world pays Jayson Werth that much money? I'd be interested in hearing if they threw money @ Crawford, since I view him as a better all-around player.

I figure he's worth the contract through Year 5. It goes downhill after that. Interesting article on the Nats this morning, about how they will have tons of big contracts on their books in the next 5-6 years (Zimmerman, Strasburg, etc)

If Werth is worth (ha!) $18 mil per season, I can't imagine what Zimmerman is going to get.

The Nationals are not going to attract many big free agents without overpaying, it is the same situation the Tigers were in back when they overpaid both Pudge Rodriguez and Magglio Ordonez. Did the Tigers eventually suffer because of that Magglio deal? I would say yes, even though the team is willing to spend more than most teams.

But they also went to the World Series just a few years after posting one of the worst seasons in baseball. This may not work out for Washington, but at least they did something. With Strasberg shelved for a full year and Harper not ready for the bigs yet, they almost had to make a splash this offseason to try and convince fans to come out to the ballpark next year.

He does produce very well in Washington. Of stadiums where he has played at least 20 games (10 stadiums throughout his career) he has the 4th highest BA (.307), 4th highest OBP (.390), 2nd highest slugging % (.580), 3rd highest OPS (.970), 5th most RBI's (13), and 3rd most HR's (6) and 8th fewest (out of 10 teams) strikeouts with 20.

This doesn't justify his contract by any means, but at least he seems to be a very productive player at that stadium. At least there's one positive from this signing lol.

Whats even worse is that Werth will be 32 years old by the time the season starts, this is just a dumb contract, they better hope that he can attract fans to buy tickets
