If Minny gets 1st pick do you take Irving

Post#1 » by Laowai » Sat Dec 4, 2010 9:43 am

I come in peace just a question since it currently looks like the Wolves will be a bottom 3 team.
I know that Kahn has stated that Rubio will be PG of the future!
But if you had a chance for Irving would you take it?
Then what would Rubio's trade value be?
The most likely candidates being the Raptors and Knicks.

From Raptors point of view they have draft picks and some quality young players.

NYKs no draft picks but players like Galli, Randoph & Chandler?

It's too early to tell. If Irving keeps up this play and measures out well at the combine, then I think you'd have to take him and move Rubio. Rubio would probably get a top 5 pick if he was coming straight over and the team needed a point guard, so Toronto makes sense.

Screw the Knicks though. No way they get Rubio for their crap.

I'm not sure you can willingly put yourself in a situaton where you have 4 PGs. The only way I pick him is if we draw 3 with Barnes/Jones going 1/2. I really doubt any team is going to bail us out in a situation like that, the best we would be looking at is Useless NYC scraps for Flynn/Ridnour or a future contional picks for Rube.

No we don't take Irving 1st because we never even pick 1st.

...in fact I'd even go so far as to gamble on a big before I sent Rubio away, Motiejunas or Vasley or even Nogueira or Kanter. (pretty much anyone but Sullinger, or would we want a big slow wide body to go with Love?) There is nothing on the Knicks or the Raptors I want so I'd prefer not to giftwrap them a potential star when there are clearly better options.

BPA and sort it out later. If we had to trade one, I'd we'd keep Rubio just because I don't think we'll get any decent value back. I think most likely we would have to move down a spot. I would say trade for a star player, but none are really on the trading block except Carmelo Anthony (and we all know how that's going to turn out). Lebron James would be nice :D. If we go that route though, we better be sure Rubio is committed to playing in Minnesota.

Based on what i've seen so far, yes I would draft Irving and trade Rubio for as much as I can. Irving looks like the real deal so far in this early college season.

That an easy YES... IF he contiues to play like this.

I would then trade Rubio + whatever needed to get Barnes or Jones (Terrence or Perry)

Personally, if I'm dealing with TOR, I'm demanding DeRozan in return.

I think in any season, if you get the first pick, you take the guy most likely to be a superstar. I'd be equally surprised to see the Number 1 pick get traded either.

Superstars are too rare a commodity, and too important to NBA success, to try to pick a guy that fits better.

The one exception seems to be Cousins though

I've been a big Kyrie fan for several years now, but even with that said this question seems sort of like a prisoner of the moment type question. Way too many intangibles over the course of a long NBA and NCAA season yet to play out. As of now, I'd have to put my money against seeing Kyrie in a Wolves uni next season.

I think we could go back and find a thread that said "If Minny gets 1st pick do you take Rubio."

I would be interested in Barnes, Jones or Kanter probably more than another PG at this point. If one player clearly establsihes himself then I'll change my position. Right now, obviously, it is way too early to play these guessing games. Drafting Irving would seem improbable since then we would be stuck in the difficult situation of trading two PGs instead of one -- and hence being shafted in numerous trades.

Technically, we do ... just not in the same year they're drafted.

I think, as things stack up now, Irving looks like a pretty clear frontrunner for the #1 pick, enough so that the Wolves would almost have to take him, even with the dominoes it would tip over. It would be interesting to see if he and Rubio could fit together, although there are some obvious obstacles as to whether that could even occur.

Obviously, a lot can change between now and June, but as things stand at the moment, it would be tough to tab someone other than Irving at the top of the draft.

What about Kanter? I don't get why everyone is suddenly off the Kanter bandwagon.

I was never really on it. Good player, wouldn't mind him if I felt he was the best guy on the board, but he's another under the rim big, pretty similar in size to Jefferson. I don't want to go back to being consistently undersized just yet.
