Carlos Pena

Post#1 » by nnnwt » Mon Dec 6, 2010 8:07 pm

Seems like it's someone new everyday

Source

The Blue Jays are "in hard" for free agent first baseman Carlos Pena, ESPN's Gordon Edes heard from another club with interest (Twitter link). The Cubs and Nationals are also known to be eyeing the Scott Boras client. Like recently-traded slugger Mark Reynolds, Pena slipped below the Mendoza line this year but isn't far removed from 40 home run power.

Um, er....not sure I know how I feel about this. I guess the power numbers are nice but he's coming off a down year and he strikes out a boatload.

no point..... I truely believe Adam Lind is the answer.

Even with his down year last season, Lind put up respectable power numbers for a decently young player. He was just measured based on the previous year, so it looked bad.

Lind strikes out alot....... but then again so does Pena.

as for defence. Lind is decent, which is all u can expect from a first baseman. He will learn cause thats the easiest defence position. Also he has experience there as a prospect. Last years was too short to judge.

dont waste big money on Pena...... just look what Jayson Werth got :o ... and he is a borderline star at best. Kinda like Pena ( argueably)

stick with Lind.... dont give up just yet

This is starting to become a Vaudeville act. We seem to be after every hoofer and tweeter on the Actors' Equity roll. It's great FREE publicity, but it gets a little tedious to just hear rumors of interest without any supporting evidence, and after a while, one suspects that it is just a ruse to make us think the team is super serious about doing something.

I'm not sure the organization is behind this, or agents who have done their homework and understand our positional needs and seeming ability to spend. Probably the later, but it is making me more cynical about AA's this offseason.

I agree its the samething last offseason with the Raps before we sign Turk. They had us rumored to any big name free agent possible.

Heh, we're only a couple weeks into free agency...I doubt very much that AA is just doing this for headlines, given that there are roughly 200 people in the world who care about our pursuit of Carlos Pena, and three-quarters of them are on here/Battersbox/BJBanter/DJF.

Looks like agents are using the Jays to drive up interest in their clients.

This guy is a 32 year-old scrub with one fluke year, I wouldn't be thrilled about bringing him over unless it's on a cheap contract, and I doubt AA is serious about this either.

As I suggest, more likely agents trying to create a better market for their clients.

Also heard AA on 590 this week (it was a replay on Saturday of the 'best interview of the week' or something on those lines) with Wilner and Blair(?) and he was commenting how the Jays seemed attached to every name in the headlines but there has been only one that had been actually true. He almost seemed frustrated with how the Jays name keeps popping up everywhere.

The Jays were touted as possibly being a big 'player' this year. Agents will toss their name around to drive the price up of their clients.

Though I think I would enjoy Pena's massive home runs too.
