Shots

Post#1 » by Penberthy » Mon Dec 6, 2010 10:02 pm

Let me just preface this by saying that I already know its everyone except kobe's fault when he takes so many shots.

Via Mark Stein:
"The annual Kobe Shot Watch has begun after the champs snoozed to four straight L's. As ESPN Stats & Info informs: L.A. is 8-0 when Kobe takes fewer than 20 shots, 4-3 when it's 20-24 and 2-3 when it's 25 or more."

When will these idiots realize that it goes both ways? Kobe shoots more when we play poorly and we play poor when he over exerts himself. Its just a vicious circle and ESPN tries to highlight it because he once had an image as a ball hog.

If im Kobe I know we have the best chance of winning when the Ball is in my hand. So if everyone is sucking it up tonight guess what the ball stays in my hands as long as I'm on the court.

If I am benched hmm well what do you know ball isn't in my hands everyone gets a chance to suck it more or bounce back.

Why do people want to make Kobe out to be A.I.?

Counting total FGA is idiotic because it ignores the circumstances of the game. There are situations where guys are generally not being aggressive, or perhaps others are in foul trouble and Kobe has to take on a bigger load. How many of those extra shots come in the closing minutes when he's gunning to get us back into the game? How many 4th quarters has he sat out because it's a blowout?

I don't think there is any kind of value in counting FGA without context.

What I'd like to see instead is how the Lakers do when Kobe's FGA is above a certain threshold in the 1st quarter. From what I've typically seen, when he comes out gunning and shoots a low percentage, we tend to struggle big time as a team (unless someone else is playing out of their mind). This is pretty much what happened against Indiana and Memphis, in particular.

this
the stupid thing about these stats is that if kobe has less than 20 or so shots, its usually because it is a blowout, and the other games where his shot attempts skyrocket it because either he is letting it fly to try to get us back into the game, or else other players aren't being aggressive with the ball - see pau, lately when he catches the ball he is being tentative, then he kicks it out with little time left on the shot clock which leads to a bailout shot by the guards (can be directly contributed to the increasing number of threes we've been taking lately)

I agree in general that FG attempts don't tell the whole story, but I would say it's pretty clear teams gear their defenses to turn Kobe into a high-volume shooter and dominate the ball.

The problem isn't FGA it's FG% and when you look at the numbers Kobe simply, for whatever reason, hasn't had a good-shooting high-volume game except for one where he shot 10-21.

Of the 9 games he's shot more than 20 shots, Kobe's averaging 39.57%.

That's not going to cut it, especially with our offensive potential. Kobe's shooting like **** this year. Plain and simple. He's at 43.1% for the first 20 games.

Now we can go ahead and turn this into a bashing Kobe thread or we can turn this into a bashing Pau thread or we can turn this into really any amount of unsubstantiated crap. But, the facts are when we had an 8 game winning streak we ran the offense and we ran it through the post.

Pau was getting praised, even beyond this board, and there was MVP talk.

Then we have Kobe, on the last game of that winning-streak, take 28 shots. Then he goes from averaging 16 FG attempts per game through the first 7 to 23 FG attempts in the next 13.

These are trends.

Yes, we've played bad teams, yes, Kobe was still getting into form early in the season, but it's also evident our ball movement and activity level just is not the same.

When Kobe takes a lot of shots it seems like we as a team cease running the offense through the post, which is how the triangle is most effective. It's how we won 8 games in a row.

The team as a whole needs to be aware of this. They need to remain disciplined, make post-entry passes, move without the ball, and take open shots. Because once they even begin to stop moving and start ball-watching, we've got a guy who has never seen a shot he didn't like.

I agree^ but given his low fg% to me will mean hes goona level his % towards the rest of the season. I normally live by the %'s always working it self out in the long run. He does take alot of jump shots (bricks) while the team is setting up for the PAUangle offense which leads to run outs and easy opportunity for the opposition (cannot setup our half court defense.). But this was always kobes dark side after all these years, he is what he is we just have to accept the good with the bad.

Agreed. The best advice I've ever received from a coach was: "A shooter has no conscience."

I guess with Kobe we'll turn it into scorer. What's made him great is his belief that every shot's going in, and when they're not his persistence. But we have too talented of a team to have one guy dominate the ball and shoot so poorly.

Would love to see Kobe posting up more often to get him some easier looks.

Isn't this as arbitrary as doing a Killer Bs watch or a Gasol FG% watch? The whole team has warts. While Kobe should be held accountable, ESPN's just choosing an old storyline and running it into the ground.

I'm not a Lakers fan, but even I can see Stein's numbers are way too self-serving to make a legitimate point. I would argue that Kobe shoots more when the Lakers are losing or when they are going to lose, and not necesarily that Kobe's shot count directly leads to wins or losses.
