So uh, Stallone is being inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame (along with Tyson and Chavez) for playing Rocky lol.. Is it safe to assume that this is going to piss off a lot of boxing fans?

You kidding me? Rocky is a **** institution.... Sly isn't anything noteworthy, but the character "Rocky Balboa" transcends sports.

I look at that movie and to this date it is just as inpactful and poignant for me.

Heck even in the last movie... it basically summed up everything it means to be not only a fighter in the ring but in life.

I am perfectly ok with it... and full endorse it.

I'm sure many will be displeased. He's going in as a non-participant so I don't get why everyone should be so pissed. "Rocky" (along with Raging Bull) is probably seen by every boxer and boxing fan. The series since the first movie (excluding Rocky V, which never happened...no, it never happened) has brought in so many fans to the sport.

Julio Cesar Chavez...no-brainer.

Mike Tyson...as everyone knows, one of the sport's most brutal punchers. He became the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Leon Spinks. Despite what he's done outside of the ring, I don't mind the induction.

Kosta Tszyu...didn't have a lot of pro-fights, but he was a champion at junior welterweight for a very long time, even becoming the undisputed champion at one point.

Joe Cortez...I don't like him, but he's been refereeing for a very long time.

My friend sent me the Donaire fight. I wish I hadn't seen Sidorenko's face at the end...I hope Montiel doesn't screw up this week so we see the two fight in February.

I need to find the Soto-Antillon fight. People are calling it a FOTY nominee.

Just wondering, what other types of people have been inducted as a non-participant? You and Rane make good points in that he definitely had a huge influence on the sport but I still find it odd that an actor is being inducted for making a popular series of movies.

Now this is on a smaller scale but think about this: Jean Claude Van Damme had a HUGE impact on kickboxing which was massive at the time during the 80's/early 90's 'Blood Sport' era. Along with kick boxers, some of the greatest mixed martial artists ever (George St. Pierre, Cro Cop, Fedor) have said they were influenced by watching Jean Claude Van Damme growing up. Should he be inducted into a Kickboxing or MMA Hall of Fame (if there was a non-Zuffa one)?

Along the same lines, countless UFC Fighters have said Bruce Lee was their biggest influence and he was one of the first to introduce the idea of actually mixing martial arts. Dana White himself has said there would be no UFC without Bruce Lee and he's said that Bruce Lee is more influential than even the Gracie family (he called him the 'Father of MMA'). Should he be inducted into the UFC HOF?

Bruce Lee... oh hell yeah. When I think of the whole concept of MIXED martial arts, the discussion starts with Bruce Lee. He was a living and breathing example of a person who transcended the sport and brought attention to it. He is a cultural icon.

Van Damme... not really. I mean has he even made an appearance at a UFC fight?

Sly no matter what... makes an appearance at boxing events with regularity. He was there at Marquez/Vasquez III and outside of hardcore boxing fans, no one knows who they are. He is actually quite a knowledgeable fight fan by the way.

I also have to point out that Rocky won the best picture...beat out Taxi Driver

Image

and All the President's Men

Image

It wasn't because Sly was such a great actor...it was for reasons that go beyond the acting but to the spirit of going the distance in-spite of all odds.

Yeah... I perhaps am making the movie more than what it is, but to many it is timeless.

I don't think people really appreciate how awesome Tyson was when he had his **** together. If you take the best Mike Tyson, he would stand toe to toe with the best and could very well be better than fighters like Ali, Holmes, Frazier, Foreman.

Chavez was/is like a demigod where I am from. Quite honestly that Taylor fight was my introduction into boxing. People going **** in the last secs while I was just a little kid.

Tszyu... god bless you for giving us the first real youtubed highlight of someone doing the chicken dance.

Cortez...horrible ref.

A bunch of other guys... my respects. Anyone who had to fight over 100 fights... really did fight for a living instead of being a prizefighter.

You guys seen this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_L7ti6cu4U

What possible reason could Haye have for that indication he makes? And the vast majority of those punches are going way over Harrison's shoulder.

Haye admits to having bet on himself to win in the third.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

I wouldn't mind keeping it to this thread. Couple of potential FOTY candidates tonight...

We've got the beginning of the bantamweight tournament on Showtime in Perez and Agbeko along with Darchinyan and Mares and the already mentioned Khan-Maidana. Sadly, all three fights will be headed to my DVR.

Victor Ortiz and Lamont Peterson could be a sleeper. Strangely enough, Jeff Lacy and Joan Guzman are fighting tonight against journeymen. Guzman once again came in overweight.

Hmm...I'm not going to go that far. I've got a good, close fight with Khan using the outer part of the ring. He'll box more than brawl with Maidana's power. I have Khan by SD.

Wow - Khan's chin has improved a lot - it's still not iron but he took a lot of Maidana shoot. I thought it would have been over in the 10th as he was on Q***** street with a lot of time.

He builted an early lead and hanged on...

Maidana was dead tire at the end...

I just finished watching 46 rounds of boxing and might I say, what 46 rounds they were.

Mares-Darchinyan

I had Mares winning, but for Tom McDonough to give him 9 rounds? I had it 7-5 Mares and taking all knockdowns and point deductions into account, I believe would've been 113-112 Mares.

Agbeko-Perez

I was certain Darchinyan's boxing work was going to be the surprise of the night until Agbeko outpointed Perez. I think I gave Perez 3 rounds at most.

Ortiz-Peterson

Solid fight, but I feel Ortiz was robbed. I don't know how Robert Hoyle gave Peterson 8 rounds.

Khan-Maidana

If you told me Khan would knock Maidana down with a pair of body shots before this fight, I would've laughed in your face. That knockdown changed the entire fight as Maidana kept his elbows in until the last few rounds. A lot of people will still wonder about Khan's chin because of the 10th, but he took Maidana's best and stayed on his feet. Exciting FOTY candidate.

P.S. What an a-hole Maidana is for not touching gloves in the 1st and one of the middle rounds and trying to get a cheap shot. That said, I don't mind a rematch or any fight that includes two of Khan, Maidana, Bradley, and Alexander, the latter two whose fight I cannot wait for.

The Mares/Vic fight... wow. It will be underrated. There is something to be said about a young kid getting cut up in the 1st round, getting knocked down, and get some points taken away and still come out with the W. Vic got bless him is perhaps the most flawed elite fighter in the sport, but he actually fought a good fight. He used some lateral ability and punches in straight lines. It is underrated how often that is over looked. The thing is that he doesn't have world class power and never hurt Mares. I know most people don't think much of the lower weight classes but those 6 lbs are huge when you are a small guy. Vic just isn't a beast at 118 compared to 112.

Agbecko/Perez... I was impressed that Agbecko didn't have rust on him, but in the same token few fighters have taken as many hard rounds as Perez has over the years.

Ortiz-Peterson... eh. I didn't see it live. I tried to watch it ondemand but I lost interest after Ortiz didn't take him out. Most people thought he won, but common hard to have sympathy for a guy who wasn't vicious enough to get a stoppage.

Khan-Miadana... WOW. FOTY in my opinion. I honestly thought it was all over in the first round with that body shot. I mean you saw the pain from Miadana and he is the type of badass who never shows pain or emotion in the ring. He was one a mission to knock him out and god lord he almost did. He doesn't have much skill but he has one thing that is truely remarkable. It is his ability to press forward despite all odds. He has power, we all know that but he refused to lose as max kellerman said a while back. He got hosed by Cortez who is a horrible ref with his point deduction. Khan was holding all night long. It was an epic 10th round. I couldn't believe that Khan was still standing after that oneslaught. He took some punishment. What I took out of this is that Khan has a chin that isn't world class but isn't glass. I also thought that Khan speed was overrated. I think a world class fighter will be able to neutralize it after a while and I don't know how he will react to it. I thought Miadana pressure really wore on Khan in the late rounds after Khan couldn't tame his aggressiveness. I also took out of it is that Miadana corner thought he was done after the 1st round with all the times they said Jesus Christ.

It is going to be a boring fight because Hopkins will make it an ugly affair. The more I doubt Hopkins... the more he has proves everyone wrong. I say UD and he retires.... I know he is old as ****, but Pascal is a dumb fighter at times and fighting with someone who is a dirty mofo and has forgotten more boxing than Pascal has ever had.
