Re: Cubs sign Carlos Pena (1/10)
Well it's only an overpay for one season better than 2,3, or 7(aka forever!).....fool better not hit .196 again.

Re: Cubs sign Carlos Pena (1/10)
It's not that bad a deal.
It's only one year so if we are squabbling over a few million, it's not horrid.
Castro
DeWitt
Byrd
Pena
Ramirez
Soriano
Colvin
Soto
Not a bad lineup at all

Good defense, good power, bad average, and high strikeouts. For a one year deal it's good. Figure most of what we do is going to be a one year stop gap until Fuku and Silva's contracts expire.

I'm certainly glad it's only a 1 year deal. Fair deal for the Cubs. We're rebuilding and the last thing we want to do is shell out 4 year contracts that will only be hinder us from that rebuilding plan. Pena is a lefty who provides power and good defense. He better not hit under .200 again but the SO's are going to come and come often.

I thought we'd hear Carlos Pena, Carlos Pena, Carlos Pena, then end up being powered by Hoff at first. Well, I was wrong, but not like Carlos Pena is any good anymore, just another popular name for the Cubs to throw around.
Typical Hendry signing. A guy who is declining-recently injured, and Hendry hopes he can have that one good year to boost his value.

...to add
A sox fan made a huge pitch to me that lefty pitchers have gotten a lot better over the last few years in the American league. He told me he read something that said lefty batters in the AL have dreacesed in BA becauase of it. So he things Pena would do well in the NL.
I tried to find the article, no luck, and I'm not sure I buy it, although the Cliff Lee's, Sabathia's, Price, and those guys make a strong arguement. The leftys have sure looked dominant in the AL lately.

Pena had plantar fasciitis last season and I read somewhere where he said it affected his ability to make contact. That would make sense when looking at his lower batting average. He still walked quite a lot and if he can improve his batting average by just 30 points I would be content.

Yeah, he batted .196 and still had a better OBP than Soriano.

You're right it could have been worse. The way I see it, 1 year deals in MLB are never bad unless you're the owner of a baseball team. Still think we overpaid and hopefully it doesn't mean this is the only semi-major move we make.

Re: Cubs sign Carlos Pena (1/10)
as an eternal optimist, i think the Cubs have a very good chance to be a better ball club next year. they're not winning the division anytime soon but i think .500 is very feasible. i like our young talent (for once it looks like they are developing), and we finished the year strong. our pitching is solid. not sexy but solid.

Re: Cubs sign Carlos Pena (1/10)
I'm not thrilled with this. Why waste 10 mil on a stop gap? If we are gonna tank and rebuild and develop, then LETS DO IT. Bring a guy up, Move Soto to 1st, Move Colvin to 1st or something.
I dont get it. This does nothing to bring us closer to a World Series. Actually you could argue it puts us $10 million further away.

Mc Nutt in ya face, biatch!
