Webster nearing return...

Post#1 » by Ice32 » Thu Dec 9, 2010 9:03 pm

According to Jonah Ballow, Webster could be given the green light to suit up against the Pistons tomorrow night. What are everyones thoughts on the SG position? Obviously Webster is unlikely to jump in the starting lineup straight away, but the next 5-10 games could determine some lineup changes based on his play.

Wes has had a decent rookie season so far averaging 9 pts and shooting well from the field, and Brewer is playing well off the bench and is actually improving. Their overall numbers are almost identical:

MINS - 29 vs 24
FG% - 42 vs 37
3PT% - 36 vs 32
FT% - 63 vs 73
REBS - 3.4 vs 3.2
ASTS - 2.1 vs 1.6
STLS - 0.5 vs 1.90
TOs - 1.6 vs 1.2
PTS - 9.1 vs 9.2

Brewer's shooting numbers have improved over the last 4 games, hitting 54% from 3 point land. Wes has only scored in double figures in 2 of his last 11 games.

I know Im going to get some smack talk for this, but I think Brewer should be starting. He brings much more defensive intensity to the team and his scoring and shooting are both improving. Yes he makes and takes some shots he shouldnt be, but effort wise, he gives 100%. Hes playing terrific defense as he ranks amongst the league leaders in steals (off the bench), and it could be the move that Wes needs to get his groove back. Playing with the 2nd unit, Wes automatically becomes the go to scorer and could actually average more minutes than Brewer.

Wes and Webster off the bench would be an awesome combo, we all know Brewer is good in small dosages, but I think it could be a move that helps the Wolves.

I'm a Brewer fan but I'll be disappointed if he is getting big minutes once Webster is healthy. Webster and Beasley are much better players and Johnson is a big investment that needs minutes.

If Wes and Webster were both in the 2nd unit why would Johnson for sure be the go to guy? I'd say it'd clearly be Webster. Wes isn't nearly aggressive enough.

Brewer is pure spark off the bench. I healthy Martell is a key asset he plays defense also

Talk about flak. I would actually sit Wes every couple of games. He's a rookie, and not used to this schedule. Let his body acclimate slowly. Tell him to study our guys and their guys, and reward him with increased minutes in the games he does play if he's playing well.

Note: This is why I'm not an NBA coach. I have no idea what I'm doing. :D

Webster gets Wes' 29 mpg
Wes gets Brewer's 24 mpg
Brewer gets Ellington's 18 mpg
Ellington gets a kick in the rear.

I wonder if Wes would do better in the second unit. He might be more aggressive if he isn't concentrating on guarding the opposing team's best wing.

I'll be at the Detroit game so I really hope he plays. 20 solid minutes would be awesome

I agree that Webster is a more aggressive scorer, but its going to take him 3-5 games to really get back into it, Wes and/or Brewer are still likely to get more minutes for now.

And I think even if Brewer starts, Wes and Webster would still get more minutes than him

Brewer is a great spark off the bench, but I think right now (next 3-5 games) Brewer should get the starting nod until Webster is back to 100% game fitness. This will take the pressue off Wes to play D and score points.

Minutes could look like for the next 5 games (with the idea that Darko is back):

PG - Ridnour - 30, Telfair - 18
SG - Brewer - 25, Wes - 20, Webster - 3
SF - Beasley - 23, Webster - 20, Wes - 5
PF - Love - 33, Beasley - 15
C - Darko - 25, Love - 8, Pek - 15

Once Webster is 100% healthy, minutes could change to:

PG - Ridnour - 30, Telfair - 18
SG - Webster- 28, Wes - 15, Brewer- 5
SF - Beasley - 23, Wes - 10, Brewer- 15
PF - Love - 33, Beasley - 15
C - Darko - 25, Love - 8, Pek - 15

Id rather notch Websters minutes up to 35, Wes' up to 25-30 and Brewer just gets the rest

Short term he won't get huge minutes but long term I think he has to. Johnson and Brewer have disappointed so far and the team needs a player that isn't a liability on the offensive end.

Probably will only get 10-20 minutes for awhile I'm assuming. His shape is going to be pretty bad I'd imagine.

Rambis said he didn't know whether guard Martell Webster would see his first regular season action Friday or Saturday. But it will be one of them. Webster has been told he can't play in back-to-back games yet, so it's a matter of choosing which game he'll play in.

I actually think Corey plays better when he is in the starting lineup, but I don't think he deserves more than 15-18 minutes a game. Let him play early in quarters to give his defensive energy and try to set the tone on that end of the court. Wes and Webster coming off the bench could be a really great combo. It would allow Wes to play good minutes as a go-to and a SF.

Correct. I think we sold his rights on draft night.

I say play him in the games on the 10th, 14th, 17th and 20th.
I've been a fan since the beginning and I will be until my end.
