Solo for Earl Clark being Discussed

Post#1 » by kdawg531 » Fri Dec 10, 2010 3:53 pm

"League sources revealed yesterday that the Indiana Pacers and the Phoenix Suns have held informal talks about swapping seldom used Suns' forward Earl Clark and equally unused Pacer's center Solomon Jones. The deal would basically shed $200,000 off of Phoenix's payroll and give them another body for the center position, and add some rebounding to the bench." -HoopsWorld

Saw this on Hoopshype this morning. http://hoopshype.com/rumors.htm

I don't really see what this would do. According to HoopsHype, Clark's options on his rookie contract haven't been picked up for the next two years yet, so I guess it becomes a wash both in the trade and in summer flexibility.

SF.14th pick in 09 draft. 6'10" in shoes 7'3" wingspan, good potential, turnover prone. Good all around skills. One site said a poor mans Danny Granger.
Sounds like an ok deal to me talent wise but will there ever be an end to glut of small forwards who like to shoot ?
If he put on 20 lbs.and grew a mean streak I'd be thrilled.... but we'd bench him for sure.

If we don't do this, we're stupid.

We get a lottery pick from 2 years ago, who has to have more potential than Solo.

But most of all, it give Tyler more playing time.

Earl Clark may be a better fit here. He doesn't really mesh well with what the Suns have going on.

I'd do it just to give him a chance because I've frankly seen enough of Solo.

Clark is a great passer for a guy his size. He would be great in the high post finding cutters. He'd be much more effective in that role than as the spot-up shooter he was asked to be in Phoenix. Plus he's played less than 500 career minutes. I think we have a pretty good handle on what Solomon Jones is and what he could be. Clark still has a lot of unrealized potential. Also Jones has been HORRIBLE this year. For me it's a no brainer.

Suns fan here.

Any Pacers fans mind telling me more about Solomon Jones and explaining his lack of playing time? Trying to look for the silver lining. :(

Exactly. There is nothing to lose if they make this trade. Solo has been good this year, probably playing the best ball of his career, but Earl Clark may have some potential down the road. What you see in Solo now is what you get, this is his peak and he's probably even out preforming himself. Clark could be solid. Although, i am not a big fan of Clark but he was a heck of a college player at Louisville.

Cause Roy Hibbert, Josh McRoberts, and James Posey are ahead of him on the depth chart.

good deal.

We give up basically nothing and get a talented guy in return. Earl could flourish in the right system. He was listed as one of the most talented guys in his draft class. Even if he doesnt work out, its still worth giving up Solo.

This is the dumbest trade ever. Hibbert cannot play the whole game at C....we have to have a backup............and Dale Davis isn't walking thru the door.

I don't think this trade accomplishes much. Can't see Clark getting much run here this season and he probably can't play center. Bottom line right now Jones is more valuable to us. If we are high on Clark go get him this summer. We will have roster sponts and he would have a training camp to acclimate himself to the team.

I'm sure JOB will have no problem with going small to sit Hibb and play Clark at center and Posey at PF.
More hopefully, perhaps they also have a better 5 in mind for Solo's replacement.
Almost time to let go of an expiring.
In any case I'll second Windy on this one. Lotto pick for a guy we'd almost let walk. Just gotta pick up the tab. Seems ok.

I think the only thing preventing this trade is a lack of a healthy body at Center without Solo Jones. One significant injury to Foster without Jones in the mix, the Center minutes immediately fall on Josh McRoberts and it is a demanding position.

I consider this trade do-able, BUT NOT NOW! Get a healthy body at the five to execute this trade.

I don't know anything About Clark...but wasn't Solo kept...and Rolle let go (and that really PO'ed me, because I think Rolle showed a lot of promise) for the sole reason we needed a backup center?

Stupid...tell Obie to give Tyler minutes instead...

this would be good for the pacers on talent potential..as clark has way more upside..but who would we have to back up hibb..foster? then that would mean clark would probably be shipped right to the street clothes, swapped out with foster..so whats the point?

now if it were D Jones instead of S Jones, the deal would be a no brainer. when you hear rumors like this you have to ask which side leaked it.

Just want to let you all know, don't be wooed by him being a 'lottery pick' or having great 'potential' I watched this guy the entire time he was at UofL. This is as good as it gets. Seriously. But as a few of you have said, at worst it's a lateral move and honestly opens more option for Tyler and such. I mean I guess Earl could chuck 3's in JOB's offense and knock a few down, but he's basically going to be Troy without the rebounding and about half the points.
