Kevin Gregg to sign with the Orioles

Post#1 » by Avenger » Fri Dec 10, 2010 6:32 pm

got offered 8-10 million for two years and you can bet he'll take that

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/o ... -10mm.html

rack up another draft pick and we're better of Gregg walking in a run against us than for us.

How do Compensation Round picks distributed?

Lets just say there are 5 compensation picks this year:
Tampa from Boston (Crawford)
Toronto from Boston (Downs)
Toronto from Baltimore (Gregg)
Toronto from Seattle (Olivo)
Texas from NY Yankees (Lee)

Would the compensation be based on record the team received the pick? or would it be based on the record of the team that acquired your player?

How does supp round ordering get decided? Is it W/L record of the team acquiring the player? Or is it ranking of the player? Just wondering whether an Orioles/Washington signing is better for the Jays then a Boston signing?

from what i understand

Teams that lose Type Free agents get the first shot, the order is determined by reverse standings from last year. For example, in Free Agency so far Washington, Philly, Red Sox and Tampa have lost type A's, so the order of selection would be Washington-->Red Sox-->Philly-->Tampa

AFter that teams that lose Type B's get their shot, the order is determined by Reverse Standings again

Now i that i actually read the rules, what a i said above seems to be correct but it gets a little more complicated if a team loses more than 1 type A or more than 1 type B.

In the type A rankings a team like the Boston red sox who would lose two type's can't have their second type A pick unless every other team that has lost a type A players makes their selection in the compensation round again. Lets just say that Adrian Beltre signed somewhere and Soriano signed somewhere, Tampa and Boston would be eligible for two type A compensation round picks, the order would be Washington-->Red Sox-->Philly-->Tampa->Boston-->Tampa

The same applies for Type B's, you can't get your second type B compensation unless every other team that lost a type B gets compensated first

the answer to this question would be it doesn't matter, our pick compensation pick is determined by OUR record

Thanks Avenger,

That makes sense. It is strange that the decision to get the 1st/2nd/3rd pick from the team acquiring the type A player is based on Elias Rankings, but the supp. pick ranking is based on standings. I.e., if Boston signs Downs we lose their 1st round pick because Crawford is ranked higher so Tampa gets it. But, we select our sandwich pick from Downs before Tampa selects their sandwich pick from Crawford, because we had a worse record. Is that correct?

that's correct, if we assume Downs signs with Boston the type A compensation in the compensation round so far in Free agency would look like this

Washington(for dunn)-->Blue Jays(for downs)--->Red Sox(for martinez)-->Philly(for werth)-->Tampa(for crawford)

So all the Jays have to do is stay within a couple runs of the Orioles going into the 9th to get those games notched as W's :)

Well he might not even close. But signing him to that type of deal I would expect he would. But they also still have Simon who was good last year.

Unless Gregg didn't pitch the day before. Then it gets tricky.

But why are we having this conversation? Aren't the Jays' games against Baltimore automatically notched as wins, anyway?

This is a great thing for the Jays. Gregg just can't get the job done as a closer. He'll be a good 6th or 7th inning guy for the Orioles, but I think that they want him to close.

37 saves. I sure hope AA kows what he's doing here. Very very hard to replace that, and they could have taken the option on him for $5mm. Seems like a bargain to me.

what's with the hate on gregg? he's not a great closer by any means but surely he's no 6th/7th inning guy. He converted a good percentage of his save opportunities, and that's what really matters. He's solid if not just a little bit wild.

He made every appearance an adventure. I think people rememeber that part of his play and don't take into account that he had a very solid year for us.

Typical of fans who expect too much from a team with no expectations. Gregg saved a ton of games, but because he blew a few, fans want to believe we were World Series bound if not for Kevin Gregg.

I have no problem seeing him go, but we'll enter next season like so many other, wondering who the closer will be.

He was very mediocre. Any Joe Shmoe could save 37 games, it's all about opportunity. 1.93 K/BB is unacceptable for a major league reliever, let alone a closer. Which is why whoever ends up with Gregg or Guerrier this season will be sorry they wasted their money. $5M/yr would be a huge overpay when they could have had an elite pitcher like JJ Putz for the same price.

Yes, clearly the public outcry over Gregg preventing us from going to the WS is resounding.

I don't even think the dumbest, most uneducated Blue Jay homer, has even whispered the idea of the Jays going to the World Series if Kevin Gregg didn't blow x number of saves last year. Classic J-Roc.

If Gregg didn't blow 5 of the saves he did last year, then we would be World Series champs right now.

all Greggs fault

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
