Well, it is difficult to determine if there really was malicious intent, because in real time it looked like an accident. If it was on purpose, then ban that jackass from the sideline.

No one knows, but as soon as it happened Twitter went nuts with the tweets about it. So who knows?

Nobody stands like that normally so obviously he was trying to trip him.

We know that the New York Jets are a team that likes to be loud and proud about their exploits. They're a team with a lot of swagger even when things are not going well, which they haven't been of late. Less than a week after losing 45-3 to the New England Patriots on Monday Night football, Rex Ryan's bunch lost 10-6 to the Miami Dolphins, and did so in a much more embarrassing fashion.

What, you say? How can a four-point deficit be worse than a 42-point beatdown? Because at least in the Patriots game, nobody on the Jets' sideline did anything rotten like this:

This play happened with 2:58 left in the third quarter, when the Dolphins punted to Jets receiver Santonio Holmes(notes). As Holmes took the ball for a short return, cornerback Nolan Carroll(notes) was hurt on the right sideline as he rushed down to cover the play. The replay showed strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi extending his knee just enough to trip Carroll up on the play. Carroll was down for a minute, but returned to play later in the game.

You can be absolutely sure that the league will be looking at this play very hard, and that Alosi will be dealt with severely. Quite a foolish gesture -- this is the kind of thing that could cost Alosi his job on some organizations. And all over a little knee shot! The very least this joker could have done was to get his money's worth on the sideline tackle, as Alabama's Tommy Lewis did to Rice's Dicky Maegle did in the 1954 Cotton Bowl:

In all seriousness, there's nothing funny about this. Taking an unsuspecting player out under any circumstances is a very dangerous thing, and Carroll could have been hurt much worse than he was.

The screnshot doesn't do it justice. Watch the actual clip and you'll see the guy clearly bend to extend his knee in an attempt to trip the runner.

DURTY.

Could have done serious damage if he had got him more square on the knee.

Look what happened to Deon Butler today when he collided knees with another player. Broken, out for the year. This could have been just as bad.

This guy should lose his job.

this is pathetic

the jets need a change in culture, and that can only come by canning the HC

they are too undiciplined and too many incidents

harrasing female reporter
tripping other player
dropping passes
love to soak the media attention

they have the talent, but they need to go with a no nonsense headcoach, not the circus ryan is running

He apolgize for it:
"I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment. My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for. I spoke to Coach Sparano and Nolan Carroll to apologize before they took off. I have also apologized to [Jets owner] Woody [Johnson], [Jets general manager] Mike [Tannebaum] and Rex [Ryan]. I accept responsibility for my actions as well as any punishment that follows."

The league is likely to come down hard on Alosi, if for no other reason than to prevent others from getting a goofball notion and doing the same thing. We suspect that even if Alosi doesn't lose his job, he's probably going to be very light in the wallet and he may be spending some time away from the team facility.

Miami player milked it IMO, didn't look like he reacted to being hit right away. That being said, still a classless and despicable move by Jets guy on the sideline.

I suppose that makes his intent clear. He should be fired or atleast banned from the sideline. What an idiot.

A complete lapse in judgment for a nobody coach that by all indications is a pretty good guy, and people want him fired?

The guy owned up immediately, apologized, and was fined 25 grand.

lol @ firing him.

Get real.

Can't believe I'm defending the guy... BUT like the poster above me said he seems like a pretty good guy and was completely broken up about his actions. That being said... they weren't that bad. He was standing in an acceptable place and wasn't like he blatantly stuck his leg out. He just leaned in with his hips a bit. On punt coverages when you have opposing players running way out of bounds this stuff was bound to happen. Just a shame it happened to the Jets when things are starting to snowball for them. Unacceptable, but not end of the world.

They already fined him 1/5th of his salary for something that isn't nearly as bad as what tends to happen on the field. Why fire him?

Sometimes I think us as fans forget that this game actually some people's real jobs and they support families. It's not like they are working at a supermarket Deli Mon.-Fri. during the week. If I make a dumb mistake at my job I'll probably get yelled at but not fired.
