about BRI

Post#1 » by nba_showtime » Tue Dec 14, 2010 11:49 pm

hello! i´m writing from spain and i´m doing an essay for the university. i have some doubts about BRI and i think you could help me.

1. Is the total money of BRI collected for the NBA (David Stern) and at the end of the season is shared among the owners of the teams in equal quantity? if the answer is yes, what would be the differences between lakers incomes and grizzlies incomes? broadcasting rights both teams in the same quantity? really the sales of shirts and similar are so profitable?
or am i absolutely wrong and Stern only calculate the 57% of BRI and teams never loss the control of their money? if its, WHY is the objective of that? i thought it was a method for keeping under control the salaries of players, but he estimates in the same proportion the benefits of the teams and if the quantity exceeds the prevision then Stern give a smaller quantity of money to the players... WHAT IS THE REASON of all that, if i´m true? :-?

2. if Stern keeps all the money until the end of the season, whats the destination of the rest of money (43%)? i´m really lost. can you help me? thank you.

To start your research on BRI, read this:

http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q13

As you'll see, most of the money is collected by the teams themselves. But some of it, like national TV revenues, are collected by the league and divided between the teams. The total BRI, however is not divided equally between the teams.

Some of the answers to your other questions may be found by a thorough reading of Larry's FAQ.

Since you seem to have little basic understanding of the league and it's finances, the questions you are asking would take quite some time to answer. And whatever answers you got in this forum would only lead to follow up questions on your part, and I don't think anyone here really wants to get into that kind of back and forth with you.

Have you thought about writing a paper on something you either know something more about, or a topic you can more easily research in a library?

ok ok thanks. this is the most complex part of all. the rest of research is easier (its about marketing) and need not complicate myself too much. its very interesting because in europe salaries at sports and other variables are absolutely uncontrolled and many teams are financially broken. on the other hand, a team of a small town could have good young players developed by themselves and, because of that, playing in the top national division, without depending a rich owner or Stern´s permission. ithanks for your answer.

Throughout the course of any given season, the league and each of its teams generate BRI, and collect money, in a manner as described by Dunkenstein above. The purpose of the 57% calculation is to ensure that the players, collectively as a group, receive their intended percentage of the total BRI generated.

The total BRI generated is calculated during the Moratorium Period following the season.

In the event that for any given salary cap year total salaries and benefits is below 57% of BRI, the difference is paid by the NBA to the players association for distribution to all NBA players who were on an NBA roster during the season.

In the event that for any given salary cap year total salaries and benefits is above 57% of BRI (or such higher percentage as determined by Art VII, Sec (12)(b)(3)), the players need to return the difference to the NBA. This reimbursement is handled through the escrow system, whereby a portion of each player’s salary (8 % this season) is held in escrow until it can be determined whether or not the players have received more than their agreed to share of BRI in salaries and benefits. If they have, money is taken out of the escrow account and returned to the NBA. The remainder of the escrow funds, if any, is returned to the players.

thanks for your answer, answerthink. i thought the idea was the players don´t exceed with their salaries. because of that, i didn´t understand why the calculation was the sum of salaries and benefits of teams. you have solve my question. thank you very much.
