Leafs re-sign Antropov

Post#1 » by Geddy » Wed Jun 6, 2007 4:16 pm

According to TSN.ca, the Leafs have signed Antropov to a 2 year contract worth over $4 million US.

It's not that bad, but I'm not sure if he was worth the money. When he's healthy he's a decent player, and he showed some good play last season with Poni.

Yeah I saw this on TSN's site and must say I was a little shocked at the amount he is receiving.

JFJ overpaid for Poni. That set the bar.

He overpaid by about 3-400,000. However, if Antropov stays healthy, I'm sure he'll be worth the contract.

There, I fixed it. Cause that's a really big "if".

Is it possible to make it bigger? I don't think many people are expecting him to stay healthy, which is yet another risk taken by JFJ. It's another one of those signings with a risk, but also with possible reward. We've seen too much of it these past few seasons, I'd rather see the sure thing.

I just don't get it. Re-sign JFJ. Re-sign Chad Kilger. Re-sign Poni. Re-sign Sundin. Re-sign Tucker. Re-sign Stajan. Re-sign McCabe. Re-sign Kaberle.

Am I missing something?

I think with the exception of McCabe's deal, the majority of signings mentioned above were quite beneficial to the team.

Agreed!

The first step for this team to improve is to move McCabe for whatever they can get for him. He's a mediocre top-line defenceman and being overpaid immensely.

The Leafs need to clear cap space by moving bloated contracts and keeping young, inexpensive assets.

Jesus H. Christ.

Why?

I mean the contract isn't that ridiculous in isolation, but with the Leafs' salary structure, it's not wise to keep overpaying mediocre players, because all of those extra 300k, 400k, 500k, etc add up and prevent us from getting another star talent. We don't need more 2nd and 3rd liners, we need some legit talent, preferably young.

Would anyone even notice/care if Antropov was gone?

PS - What happened to the days that players took less money to play with the Leafs?

This is where I was going with my previous post. I agree with Crowned and most/all of the signing except McCabe could be justified, but why? Shouldn't we be going in a different direction? this collection of players has not won- period. So why are we still going with them and giving them raises in the process?

2 mil to Antripov, a career underachiever who hasn't been healthy for a 25 game stretch his entire career is a waste of 2 mil, IMO.

Stanley Cup champion Anneheim Mighty Ducks only have 6 players (Neidermeyer, Pronger, Gigure, Marchant, McDonald, Selane) on their team this year who earn more then Antripov will next year. We are wasting moeny on average-at-best talent.

There's more too this, talked to a producer from Leafs TV today

He said the Leafs have a few trades lined up, and this is all about collecting assets. Wasn't allowed to tell me what exactly they were

Antropov resigned, ewww. overpaid as well. Now traded for another No2 goalie. Bad deal. When will they fire this guy? If the Leafs want to go mediocre, they should have Rob Babcock run the Leafs.

I am quite a bit confused at why we having shopped McCabe. What I am most shock is the fact that Antropov is back. I don't know how you guys feel about him but I have been quite disappointed in him. He gets pushed around by little guys, doesn't have the speed, isn't that tough, can't score worth a lick, and all and all, a waste of money.

we've had plenty of opportunity to dump this guy over the years... now we seem to be justifying a 2 year deal. he is not a good player, will not be a good player. why is he here? time to move on, but we missed the boat again.
