Yao has stress fracture in left ankle - Done for the season

An MRI performed today on Rockets center Yao Ming revealed a stress fracture of the Medial Malleolus in his left ankle. The fracture, which is related to his previous injury of the Tarsal Navicular bone, presented itself during the course of his current rehabilitation program. There is no timetable for his return at this time.

The team will have no additional comment at this time. Information regarding his treatment program will be made available at a later date.

Yao Ming with another stress fracture in his left ankle. Not in same bone, but same ankle. Wondering now if he'll ever return.

Previous tests did not show the fracture. MRI on Thur showed the injury. Might have happened compensating for sprain. He had no idea yest.

Yao said the obvious in summer. If can't stay healthy, can't keep playing. Is it over?

Griz fan here, and I'd like to say this sucks. Even when he's putting it on the Grizzlies, this guy is so skilled and fun to watch.

if his career is over (which we all hope it's not), that will be terrible.

And not a bit of sarcasm here, I ain't kidding. It's a real shame.

I love Yao the person and what he can bring to a team when healthy, but I'm prepared to move on and have been since the injury against the Lakers in the playoffs.

Ironically, it was also that series that sold me on his toughness and ability to be a leader for this team when he demanded back in the game while in the tunnel because he knew the team needed him. He wanted to win so bad. He then proceeded to return and put a stamp on the game. I was glad the cameras picked that up and I will always remember Yao that way and not the grimace on his face from that final injury that ultimately knocked him out of the series shortly thereafter.

Yao is a warrior...not his fault that his body can't sustain the wait of his massive heart. I think it is time that he do what is best for his life after basketball and his family. Being able to walk without pain surely isn't overrated.

Its also time for the Rockets to do what is best for the team whatever they deem that is. If he choses not to retire and they choose to resign him to do right by him so to speak, it better be for a reasonable amount that doesn't cripple this team. I don't care how much revenue he brings in. Signing him to a substantial contract would tell me that it is all about the money and zero about winning championships. I'm a Rockets fan...

Very sorry to read this. Yao's a great player, as well as a person. The kind of guy who can put your team loyalties aside and just enjoy watching. You wish his body was as strong as his desire.

Can't say I'm surprised. I'm on the same boat as Vator, it's time to move on. That's not a bad thing, he was a terrific player when he was healthy and I too will forever remember that moment in Game 1 against the Lakers. But unfortunately there's no such thing as a healthy Yao Ming anymore. Even if he were trying to come back next season, as harsh as it sounds, I wouldn't want him, but from a revenue standpoint it's hard to imagine we wouldn't resign him.

Is it bad that I almost WANT him to retire? I mean, it's better to hear this before we might have potentially signed him to another contract. Now with this being sorta last straw, we can hopefully move on, and continue developing our young guys as we can move more towards a rebuild.

Yao Ming will retire. He's going to need more operations after the restructuring of his foot. The restructuring of his foot created a new stress fracture on a different bone. Call it a career. its better than not being able to walk later on.

If Yao doesn't retire I wouldn't mind Morey signing him to the vet Minimum and letting him rehab in the background. Daryl can rebuild the team not centered around Yao and if he does come back use him as a role player.
