JOB quote about Big Roy

Post#1 » by chube » Wed Dec 15, 2010 6:46 am

"I think that Roy would say -- and I certainly share this belief -- I don't think he's having a very good season," O'Brien said. "I think that he can play at a much higher level right away than he's doing right now."

Second part - accurate. And even Roy was quoted as saying that he's "playing [poorly] now" (Considering "poorly" was in parentheses, I wonder what word he really said. :-? And this is coming off two straight duds where he hardly played. So he didn't produce when he didn't get the minutes, shocker! And apparently Solomon Jones "on" his game is a million times better than Roy "off his game."

But to say that Roy isn't having a good season? His play is a a good chunk of the reason we're halfway competitive this year, especially given the lack of talent at the 5 around the league compared to other teams.

So there's this, saying that Paul George hasn't had good practices/games/decision-making, deciding for whatever reason that Tyler isn't worth playing hardly at all anymore, jerking around Darren Collison's minutes to the point where even DC mentioned it to the Indy Star, and going back to last year calling McBob's then-career game "irrelevant" because it was in a loss...way to keep the guys motivated, JOB!

Whatever...that much closer to this clown not being back next year.

Roy Hibbert's hard on himself. He looks at his low shooting percentage for a C, and his turnover #'s, and his block #'s that have gone down.

This coach should be more supportive. I understand he may be trying to provide reverse motivation but I am not a fan of his approach.

I actually moved to Indiana recently from texas. I have no former reason to be biased against this coach and feel like I can provide a fresh look from a neutral perspective. But the more I read, the more I think this coach is more harm than good.

IMO the reason why Hibbert struggles in some games is that he doesnt get consistent touches and he is running back and forth down the court because of bad shots.. he probably gets exhausted. Then add in how he is sometimes totally ignored on offense and the fatigue can creep into the mind. If you get touches then you stay focused more easily.

Keep in mind I've been a coach, and have been in the hotseat when my teams were struggling. Sometimes--many times--criticisms of coaches are unfair.

But that being said, O'Brien is just a bad coach, or at least the wrong coach for this team. His rotations make no sense, and his offensive schemes suck.

No way Posey ought to be getting minutes at PF ahead of TH. O'Brien is also too enamored of Ford when IMO Price could do just as well and playing him would be building for our future, while Ford is going to be gone.

I don't believe Dunleavy and Rush are "interchangeable." I like MDJ, and believe he has a role on this team. but Rush brings as much offensively and is a considerably better defender.

We have yet to see anything of George or Stephenson even in garbage time, and I think Obie was a big part of the decision to keep Solo and let Rolle go, IMO a wrong decision long term.

Bird needs to get rid of Obie. Mark Jackson or Bill Laimbeer are a couple who would be distinct upgrades, but I'm sure there are others as well.

I despise how JOB doesn't use his t/o's effectively. He usually calls one after being on the wrong-end of a 15-0 run. Good coaches sense when to regroup.

It appears we will live and die by the 3, where we are 25%, connecting on 17 of 68 attempts over the last three games. This has gone far enough, Larry needs to relinquish Obie of his duties. You see, Jim also ruined Employee #8 by turning him into a three-point chucker. We need to stop this maniac before it is too late.

I believe strongly that you praise in public and criticize in private. O'B is breaking that rule. Larry Brown used to do that too and he eventually lost the team. O'B will too if he doesn't change that.

and yes he just doesn't take advantage of garbage time to develop players hoping for come backs instead. I could have predicted that last night was going to be a blow-out loss and I would have activated the young kids in anticipation of playing them in a hopeless fourth quarter.

He couldnt put in any guys to develop because he put them on the injured list. PG, Lance both were on the injured list. Until he gets fired, we are just stuck with them riding the bench.

The optimistic side of me says that maybe he knows what buttons to push with Roy. However, he might need to lighten up a bit as Roy probably works as hard as anyone on this roster to get better.

The realistic side tells you that JOB has no idea what he's doing.

Homie is taking almost 15 shots a game.... for someone who as of lately is hovering barely above 30%, I think he needs less, not more touches. He needs to focus less on scoring and more on defense, rebounding, and distributing (he seems quite good at that for a C).

You realize you are quoting a post from 2 weeks ago?

Probably not.

I'm really worried that our Moron coach is going to end up ruining Hibbert...anyone else agree?

Even good coaches can make mistakes like that...yet alone an idiot like Obie...anyone remember how promising Greg Ostertag looked when he first came into the league? Sloan is a good coach--but he was exactly the wrong type of coach for Ostertag...

Greg Ostertag most certainly over-achieved under Sloan what he would have achieved under anyone else. The fact that the guy had a career over 3 years long is a testament to the miracle worker that is Sloan.

Let's not talk about Hibbert and Ostertag in the same place. Maybe you could edit that post?

Man, Larry Brown really messed up the development of Darko Milicic.

I feel like Hibbert will develop talent no matter what coach it is. The coach/system will affect his stats and production, though.

I don't know, Darko himself, said that he didn't work as hard as he should've...and if that's the case, that's not on Larry Brown. I agree though Big Roy would've developed with anyone, he's too smart of a player and works too hard not to.

I was attempting to be funny with first statement.

What I'm trying to say is, a coach doesn't make or break a player's development, that's up to them. What a coach can mess up is where he puts the player.

For example, Hibbert is a legit low-post threat. He's constantly having to run out to run that plug-the-lane elbow passing game, which he has the passing down, but he's still not a particularly mobile guy. His shot selection (at the behest of Obie because he's a good soldier) comes very often in situations where his position is poor. He should be a dependable guy to give the ball to when the clock winds down, by going one-on-one against his man and either hitting that hook or passing out to an open man. He's and Collison should have their hands on the ball, not Granger (who has sadly had a number of poor shot clock violations because he can't beat his man off the dribble) or TJ Ford (shot selection is average, and then his shooting is bad) or James Posey (for some reason...he hasn't been able to shoot).

I've always wondered about this, but why do we always give Roy the ball behind the 3-point line almost every possesion? Nothin good ever comes out of this.
