Shanahan benches Donovan McNabb. Grossman to start!

Post#1 » by ikidunot » Fri Dec 17, 2010 4:36 pm

he Washington Redskins have decided to start Rex Grossman over Donovan McNabb at quarterback in Dallas on Sunday just a month after signing McNabb to a much-ballyhooed contract extension, according to multiple media reports, which cite anonymous sources.

McNabb, who has a career-worst 15 interceptions this season, has started all of the Redskins' 13 games, with Grossman playing one series at the end of a Week 8 loss at Detroit. McNabb has thrown for 3,377 yards with 14 touchdown passes and a 77.1 passer rating.

Grossman has not started a game since 2008 and has thrown only seven passes this year. He was with Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan last year in Houston. In a 2007 start against the Cowboys while with Chicago he completed 15 of 32 passes for 195 yards and was intercepted three times.

Shanahan has lost his mind. IMO Shanahan hasn't handled this or the Haynesworth situation well at all.

Update:
Mike Shanahan expected to address the situation around 12:30-12:45 p.m.

So maybe there is a logical explanation.

Mike Shanahan: John Beck will be Rex Grossman's backup on Sunday. ''I cannot guarantee'' that McNabb ''will be back next year.''

Shanahan: ''Rex deserves the chance to show us what he can do. I've been impressed with him since day one.''

Shanahan is an idiot if he believes McNabb is the problem there, and that Grossman will bring them better luck.

Also sounds like the players aren't too happy about this and I wonder how long before Shanahan loses the locker room.

We have the most horrendous offensive line in the league and McNabb takes the fall.

I have very little faith left in our team and the management.

McNabb ranks 27th in passer rating, 29th in completion percentage, 28th in INT%. I question the timing of the move but it's hard to argue with Shanahan's assertion that McNabb isn't playing well enough to win. There's no way in hell Rex Grossman gives you a better chance to win than McNabb. Or pretty much anyone else on an NFL roster for that matter.

I can easily see him in Arizona or Miami next year, whichever team will give him more $$. And I suspect he'll disappoint there too.

Donovan's not getting any chance really to succeed.. He's been successful as a downfield passer with guys like Desean and we have some downfield receivers here like Moss and Armstrong but theyre insisting on running a short-intermediate passing game. And if they try stretching the field theyre lucky if the line can hold up for any time at all. They have an aging Donavon and are trying to win now because some of their key guys are getting old but theyre are still huge holes that need to filled on the line, reciever, and the front 7.

sure mcnabb might be average now

but its so harsh to bench him when he has no receivers, terrible O line, and has to learn a complicated offense

I don't think he would be getting benched if he was average.

What the hell is Shannahan thinking? I understand McNabb is playing pretty poorly, but seriously Rex Grossman? Can Shannahan honestly think that he gives the team a better chance to win?

Not even Manning would be playing well on Washington.

Shanahan is just a power-tripping egomaniac. Trying to show who is boss, put the blame on someone else (hey, why not bench the kicking team instead?), and now as expected the team is pissed at him.

Guy hasn't won anything since having Elway and a really good team.

Too bad rex wasnt starting from the beginning. The only year he started all season his team went to the super bowl.

He also said Washington used his client's suggested changes against Dallas.

"I believe there is tension between Donovan and Kyle that's rooted in the fact that Donovan has suggested modifications to Kyle's offense based on intricacies Donovan has learned in his NFL career," Smith wrote. "For example, Donovan has asked all year that the team run more screen passes to help manage the pass rush more effectively. Ironically, Kyle decided to employ Donovan's suggestions after he unceremoniously benched him on Sunday."

Both Shanahans deserve to be fired. You don't treat a player of Donavan's caliber like that.

McNabb played like crap. He threw more INT's than TD's. How exactly should he be treated? If you're not getting the job done, you're benched to see if we have a better option, especially when the playoffs are out of the question.

Is Rex Grossman really a better option? Is Rex Grossman going to be any part of that teams future? No.

Is a 34 year old Donovan McNabb who just threw more INT's than TD's going to be part of their future? No.
