Re: Are the Orlando Magic a better team with the moves made?
Lets see, we haven't even started a game with this new roster, yet we make bold predictions as to say they either will suck or will do great. This is a huge game changer for the Magic because they have lost 4 players i believe that were all part of a chemistry that the magic have built for years. Now we have a magic player who was huge for magic's final run, a crazy 3 point shooter in richardson, and a wild card arenas who was a monster couple of years back..
Whats crazy is that arenas have had a really good game this season and it was against The MAGIC, which i believe he have done so to show off his value to a team he knew that were going to be interested in him...After coasting for some time, his time to shine once again is in question when he will now play for the Magic. I don't kow what to expect from all of this. Lets see how this will all play.

Short Term: Worse
Worse short term unless another trade is done which balances this roster.
- Nelson and Arenas sharing minutes? How is that going to work?
- What happens to Duhon?
- They have no deep strong backup front court bench
- Way to many shooters, not enough defenders
- Way to many of the same type of player. Redick, Richardson, Q Richardson, Arenas, Hedo, we get it, they like outside shooting. Howabout the rest of the things needed to win.
However, if they make another tweak or two to this roster, it may look better. If they plan to retain who they just acquired, then getting rid of Redick and Q Richardson for defense at the 2, 3 and 4 is what they need the most. Had they not done the Phoenix deal, this team would have been better with
Nelson - Duhon
Arenas - Redick
Carter - Pietrus
Bass - Gortat
Howard - Gortat
Of course if they click well, then my decision could be different. However, I don't see it happening. Arenas/Richardson are not known for this.
Long Term: Much Worse
Long term, do I really need to get into that.
- Added an injury prone combo guard at the max which could just be Lewis 2.0
- Will likely overpay to retain Jason Richardson
- Added one of the leagues worst contracts in Hedo
- They did however get rid of Lewis who arguably is the worst contract in the NBA.
There are no pros long term.

They have more talent now, but I don't think it's enough to go anywhere. I'd still classify these as lateral moves.

Re: Are the Orlando Magic a better team with the moves made?
It all remains to be seen.
IF (and it's a huge if) Gilbert Arenas comes to Orlando motivated and hungry, the Gil of three years ago rather than the passive Arenas who's been in Washington recently, then Orlando flat out ripped off the Wizards.
IF (and again it's a huge if) Hedo Turkgolu finds his 2007-2009 Orlando form, then Orlando made out well in the Phoenix trade, too. Richardson fits better in Orlando than Vince did, simply by the fact that he's proven to be an effective offensive player without the ball. Earl Clark has buckets of potential (although from what I have read from Phoenix fans, perhaps not too much desire to realise it). Still, picking late in the first round, he's a better prospect than Orlando could've hoped to have gotten this coming summer, so that portion of the deal isn't bad, either. It really all hinges on Hedo.

Not having to play him might be the biggest plus of the entire trade.

I had Duhon very shortly on a fantasy team and couldn't agree more.

D really hasn't been much of a problem this season, barring a few games. And let's face it, we hardly gave up All-Defense guys in Carter or Lewis. Peaches wasn't bad when motivated, and Gortat was a solid defender although stuck behind Howard his impact was negligible.
The defense all depends on how these players buy into the Magic's system. Hedo was part of a team that was top 5 in defensive efficiency during our Finals run, and he's as lazy as they come on defense most of the time.

i would have just done the lewis arenas trade and called it a day until the trade deadline when a better trade could have possibly come up

Orlando is a much better team now. Sure, they need depth at the 5 behind Dwight Howard, but overall the team is much stronger. I won't be surprised if they make another trade before the deadline, but we'll see how things go with the new additions first.

Reggie Evans and his expiring contract would be a pretty good fit on the Magic.

I don't know, they're losing a lot of defense with Pietrus and Gortat gone. Dwight is obviously a tremendous defender but one man can't carry an entire team defensively. It's pretty much the same reason the Spurs disappointed last year. Duncan didn't have much help defensively apart from Ginobili and Bogans. He was basically by himself on the front court (Dyess, Bonner, and Blair were all horrible defenders for the Spurs last year). We'll see how well Dwight does on a team with guys that aren't renown for their defensive abilities.

On paper this team is like the 1998-2000 Miami Heat now with Tim Hardaway and Zo but now it is Arenas and Dwight.
